How to choose a business server

Pick the form factor.

Choose processors. Single socket servers suit file, print and small virtual hosts. Dual socket servers suit larger virtualisation and databases. Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC are both available on most platforms.

Size the memory. Virtual hosts need the most memory. Allow for growth and leave slots free.

Plan storage. Choose SSDs for speed and HDDs for bulk capacity, protected by a RAID controller. Shared storage suits clusters.

Network ports. 10GbE or 25GbE ports are standard for virtual hosts. Add network cards as needed.

Redundancy. Dual hot plug power supplies, RAID and redundant fans keep the server running if a part fails.

Licensing. Remember operating system and hypervisor licences, which are often based on processor cores.
