VA (volt-amperes) is the apparent power rating of a UPS. It's the maximum electrical load it can supply to connected equipment. It is always equal to or higher than the watt rating. To size a UPS correctly, divide your total equipment wattage by the power factor (typically 0.8 for mixed IT loads) to get the minimum VA you need.

A UPS should never be loaded above 80% of its rated capacity. Operating above this threshold shortens battery life, reduces runtime headroom, and leaves no buffer for load spikes when equipment starts up. The standard practice is to size your UPS so your actual load sits between 50% and 75% of the unit's VA rating.

A rack mount UPS (1U, 2U, 3U) installs directly into a standard 19-inch server rack. Rack UPS is the right choice for server rooms and data centres with existing rack infrastructure. A tower UPS stands upright on the floor or a shelf. Tower UPS is better suited to offices, branch locations, or environments without a server rack.
Yes. Network switches and firewalls are typically lower-wattage devices, but they are often more critical to protect than servers. If your network infrastructure loses power before servers can shut down gracefully, you risk data corruption and extended recovery time. Including all active networking equipment in your UPS load calculation is standard practice.
