Industrial Firewalls for OT Networks

An industrial firewall does the same core job as an office firewall, but it is built for OT sites and understands industrial traffic. These are the differences that matter.

1. Built for the cabinet. Industrial firewalls mount on DIN rail, run on 12 to 48 VDC with dual power inputs, and handle wide temperatures and vibration. Rugged models such as the FortiGate Rugged 60G and 70G suit substations, pump stations and transport.

2. Understands industrial protocols. Deep packet inspection of Modbus TCP, DNP3, EtherNet/IP and IEC 60870-5-104 lets you allow reads but block writes, or stop commands from unknown hosts.

3. Keeps running. Some models include bypass relays or fail open options so control traffic is not cut if the firewall fails. Check what your site needs before choosing.

4. Segments zones. The main job is to separate control networks from the office network and the internet, then allow only the traffic each zone needs. Group PLCs, HMIs and SCADA servers into zones and conduits as IEC 62443 describes.

5. Remote access done safely. Vendors and engineers should connect through VPN with multi factor authentication, not open ports. Many industrial firewalls include 4G or 5G for remote sites.
