Arista and data centre switch part numbers explained

Data centre switch part numbers tell you the series, port count and speeds before you open a data sheet. Here is how to read them, using Arista as the example.

Prefix

Series and generation. The number after the prefix is the series, such as 7050, 7060 or 7280. Higher series usually add deeper buffers, more routing scale or higher speeds.

Port letters. Letters after the port counts show the speed:

  • T: copper RJ45
  • S: SFP or SFP+ (1G or 10G)
  • Y: 25G SFP28
  • C: 100G QSFP28
  • D: 400G QSFP-DD

So DCS-7050SX3-48YC8 means 48 x 25G ports and 8 x 100G uplinks, and DCS-7280CR3-32D4 means 32 x 100G ports and 4 x 400G ports.

Airflow suffix. A suffix such as -F or -R shows the airflow direction. It must match your hot and cold aisle layout, and every fan and power supply must match too.

Before you order, confirm the full part number against the vendor data sheet, then choose the optics. Short links in a rack suit DAC cables, while longer links need transceivers and fibre patch leads. Read our SFP compatibility guide for coding by brand.
