Description

The QSFP-40G-PLR4-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Arista QSFP-40G-PLR4. This QSFP+ transceiver operates in Arista QSFP+ ports across their data center switch portfolio, supporting both 40G aggregate links and 4x10G breakout modes over single-mode fibre. - 40GBASE-PLR4 compliance guarantees interoperability with IEEE 802.3ba Ethernet equipment and can operate in 4x10GBASE-LR breakout mode - QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps aggregate throughput (4 x 10Gbps lanes), single-mode fibre, up to 10km reach at 1310nm via MPO/MTP connector - Four-lane parallel single-mode (PSM) architecture using CWDM wavelengths (1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, 1331nm) with integrated multiplexer and demultiplexer - Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM/DOM) support for real-time monitoring of optical power, temperature, bias current, and voltage - Hot-swappable installation, compliant with QSFP+ MSA SFF-8436 standard, power consumption under 3.5W - Operating temperature range 0 to 70 degrees Celsius for standard commercial networking environments

Features

• Four independent 10G lanes multiplexed to a single 40G MPO interface, enabling both 40GBASE-PLR4 and 4x10GBASE-LR breakout modes without reconfiguration
• CWDM wavelength division multiplexing across four lanes (1271/1291/1311/1331nm) reduces fibre count from 8 strands (SR4) to 2 strands (duplex), compatible with existing 10GBASE-LR structured cabling
• Parallel single-mode (PSM) architecture with DFB laser transmitters and PIN photodiode receivers delivers 7dB minimum optical budget for 10km reach over OS1 fibre
• MSA-compliant 38-pin electrical interface enables hot-swap capability in any QSFP+ port without system disruption or power cycling
• DDM interface exposes real-time lane-specific optical power levels, temperature, and bias current via I2C, supporting proactive link quality monitoring and troubleshooting
• Low power dissipation under 3.5W and commercial temperature rating (0 to 70C) suit high-density leaf-spine deployments without additional cooling requirements

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Arista QSFP-40G-PLR4?
A: Yes. This transceiver is coded for Arista platforms and meets the 40GBASE-PLR4 standard with identical electrical, optical, and mechanical specifications: QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps data rate, 1310nm CWDM transmission, 10km reach over single-mode fibre via MPO connector. It is plug-and-play compatible with Arista QSFP+ ports.

Q: Which Arista platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module is compatible with Arista switches and routers featuring QSFP+ ports. Compatibility depends on the port supporting 40G Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ba) with QSFP+ electrical and optical interfaces. Arista QSFP+ ports typically support both 40G aggregate and 4x10G breakout modes when configured in software.

Q: Can this operate in 4x10G breakout mode, and what fibre is required?
A: Yes. The four independent lanes can operate as 4x10GBASE-LR channels when the host port is configured for breakout mode. Each lane transmits at 10Gbps over a single fibre pair. You will need an MPO-to-LC breakout cable (MPO on the transceiver side, four duplex LC connectors on the switch side) and OS1/OS2 single-mode fibre for each 10G link, up to 10km per lane.

Q: What is the difference between PLR4 and LR4, and are they interoperable?
A: 40GBASE-PLR4 uses parallel single-mode architecture with four separate wavelengths (1271/1291/1311/1331nm CWDM) over an MPO connector, while 40GBASE-LR4 uses four wavelengths (around 1295.56 to 1309.14nm, dense CWDM) over a duplex LC connector. They are not directly interoperable due to different connector types and wavelength grids, but both achieve 10km reach and support 4x10G modes.

Q: Does this transceiver require specific fibre patch cord polarity for the MPO connection?
A: Yes. The transceiver expects a Type B (key-up to key-down) MPO polarity for proper transmit-to-receive mapping. Fibres 1-4 carry transmit on one end and receive on the other, with fibres 9-12 carrying the return path. Using incorrect polarity (straight-through Type A) will result in no link. Verify your MPO trunk and breakout cable polarity matches the IEEE 40GBASE-SR4 pinout standard.
