Description

The DAC-SFP-10G-xM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Dell DAC-SFP-10G-1M. It is a passive twinax cable that connects Dell switches and routers via SFP+ ports, supporting 10 Gigabit Ethernet without requiring external power or active signal conditioning. - Compliant with IEEE 802.3, SFF-8431, and SFP+ MSA standards, ensuring interoperability with Dell equipment and other MSA-compliant platforms - 10GBASE-CU passive copper twinax cable with SFP+ connectors on both ends - 30 AWG wire gauge with 100 ohm impedance, providing low insertion loss and ultra-low crosstalk for reliable 10 Gbps transmission - Hot-swappable design allows seamless installation and replacement without network interruption - Available in 1M, 2M, 3M, and 5M lengths for flexible rack and cross-rack connectivity - Draws less than 0.5W per cable, offering a cost-effective and low-latency alternative to optical transceivers and fiber for short-distance links

Features

• SFF-8431 and SFP+ MSA compliance guarantees electrical compatibility with Dell PowerSwitch, Networking, and Force10 platforms, as well as third-party switches that accept uncoded or MSA-compliant DAC cables
• Passive copper architecture with no active electronics in the connector housing eliminates the signal conditioning overhead found in active cables, reducing cost, power draw, and latency for intra-rack and adjacent-rack deployments
• 30 AWG twinaxial copper pairs with controlled PCB design minimize crosstalk, insertion loss, and return loss across the full 10 Gbps signaling bandwidth, maintaining IEEE 802.3 compliance
• Hot-swap capability and latching SFP+ connectors allow live insertion and removal without powering down the host device, simplifying maintenance and reducing downtime during topology changes
• Multiple length options from 1M to 5M support a range of deployment scenarios, from tight top-of-rack switch-to-server connections to longer cross-rack switch-to-switch links
• PVC jacket provides mechanical protection and meets standard fire safety ratings for data center cable routing, while the low bend radius of twinax copper allows flexible routing in high-density rack environments

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Dell DAC-SFP-10G-1M?
A: Yes. This cable meets the 10GBASE-CU standard and the SFP+ MSA form factor specification that Dell platforms require. It is plug-and-play compatible and will be recognized as a passive twinax DAC by Dell switches and routers with SFP+ ports.

Q: Which Dell platforms support this cable?
A: This cable works in any Dell switch or router with SFP+ ports that accept 10GBASE-CU passive DAC cables, including Dell PowerSwitch and Networking platforms. If your Dell device has an SFP+ slot and supports passive twinax, this cable will function without issue.

Q: What is the practical reach limit for passive DAC, and when should I use active or optical cables instead?
A: Passive DAC cables are reliable up to 5 meters. Beyond that length, signal attenuation and crosstalk increase beyond acceptable margins for 10 Gbps operation. For runs longer than 5M, use an active DAC (which includes signal conditioning) or optical transceivers with fiber, which can reach 300M on multi-mode or 10 km on single-mode.

Q: Can I mix different cable lengths between the same pair of switches, or will that cause timing issues?
A: You can mix lengths freely. Each cable is an independent point-to-point link. Because passive DAC has negligible propagation delay variation across the 1M to 5M range, there is no timing skew concern. Link aggregation, ECMP, or independent 10G links all work normally with mixed lengths.

Q: Does this cable support EEPROM access, and will it report temperature or power data like an optical transceiver?
A: Yes, the cable includes EEPROM (per SFF-8472) that stores vendor and compliance data, which the host can read via the I2C interface. However, passive DAC cables do not monitor temperature, voltage, or power because they contain no active circuitry or optical components. Those diagnostic parameters are only available with optical transceivers or active cables.
