Description

The JNP-QSFP-40GE-ER4-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Juniper JNP-QSFP-40GE-ER4. This QSFP+ transceiver provides plug-and-play 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in Juniper switches and routers with standard QSFP+ ports. - IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-ER4 compliance guarantees interoperability across multi-vendor 40GbE networks - QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps data rate, 1310nm wavelength (four CWDM lanes at 1271/1291/1311/1331nm), 40km reach over single-mode fiber - Duplex LC connector interface with DOM/DDM support for real-time monitoring of optical power, temperature, bias current, and voltage - Four-lane CWDM architecture multiplexes 10Gbps electrical lanes into a single 40Gbps optical link over one fibre pair - Hot-swappable design with max power consumption under 3.5W, operating temperature range 0 to 70 degrees Celsius - Also supports OTU3 (43.01Gbps) and STM-256 (39.81Gbps) applications for optical transport and SONET/SDH networks

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-ER4 and QSFP+ MSA (SFF-8436) compliance ensures seamless integration with standards-compliant QSFP+ host systems and interoperability across Juniper and third-party equipment
• Four-lane CWDM architecture splits 40Gbps into four independent 10Gbps electrical lanes, converts them to four optical wavelengths (1271/1291/1311/1331nm), and multiplexes them onto a single duplex fibre pair for extended reach
• DFB laser transmitters and APD photodiode receivers deliver the sensitivity and optical budget required to achieve 40km reach over standard G.652 single-mode fibre
• Digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) provides real-time access to per-lane transmit and receive optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage via I2C interface per QSFP+ MSA specification
• Hot-swappable operation allows field installation and replacement without powering down the host system, with low power consumption under 3.5W
• OTU3 (43.01Gbps) and STM-256 (39.81Gbps) support extends application range beyond 40 Gigabit Ethernet into optical transport networks and SONET/SDH infrastructure

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Juniper JNP-QSFP-40GE-ER4?
A: Yes. This transceiver is designed as a plug-and-play replacement for the JNP-QSFP-40GE-ER4. It matches the QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps data rate, 1310nm wavelength operation, and 40km single-mode fibre reach specified by Juniper. It complies with IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-ER4 and QSFP+ MSA standards, ensuring functional equivalence in any Juniper platform with a QSFP+ port that accepts the original part.

Q: Which Juniper platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in any Juniper switch or router with a QSFP+ port that supports 40GBASE-ER4 optics. This includes platforms across the QFX, EX, SRX, and MX families that feature QSFP+ interfaces and run Junos OS with 40GbE support. Confirm compatibility by verifying that your platform lists JNP-QSFP-40GE-ER4 in the Juniper hardware compatibility tool or datasheet.

Q: What fibre type and grade are required to achieve 40km reach?
A: You need OS2 single-mode fibre (ITU-T G.652 compliant) to achieve the full 40km distance. The transceiver has a specified link budget designed for standard single-mode fibre with typical attenuation around 0.4 dB/km at 1310nm. Actual reach depends on total link loss including fibre attenuation, splice loss, connector loss, and any margin required for ageing. Multimode fibre is not supported.

Q: How does the four-lane CWDM architecture affect cabling and interoperability?
A: The four CWDM lanes (1271, 1291, 1311, 1331nm) are multiplexed and demultiplexed internally within the transceiver module. From a cabling perspective, you only connect a standard duplex LC fibre pair, identical to any other duplex transceiver. The CWDM multiplexing is transparent to the fibre plant. Both ends of the link must use 40GBASE-ER4 transceivers with matching CWDM wavelength sets. You cannot mix ER4 with LR4, SR4, or other 40G variants.

Q: Does this transceiver require forward error correction (FEC) to be enabled on the host?
A: IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-ER4 does not mandate FEC, and this transceiver will operate without FEC enabled. However, many Juniper platforms enable FEC by default on 40G interfaces to improve link margin and bit error rate performance, particularly at extended distances. Check your Junos configuration and consider enabling FEC if you experience link stability issues or are operating near the maximum 40km distance. FEC behaviour is controlled by the host, not the transceiver.
