Description

The JNP-40G-AOC-xM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Juniper JNP-40G-AOC-1M and other lengths in the series. This active optical cable provides plug-and-play connectivity for 40Gb/s QSFP+ ports on Juniper switches and routers. - Compliant with IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 and SFF-8436 QSFP+ MSA standards, ensuring interoperability across multi-vendor platforms - 40Gb/s aggregate data rate over four independent 10Gb/s optical lanes at 850nm wavelength - QSFP+ to QSFP+ form factor with multi-mode fibre optic cable and integrated VCSEL transceivers - Available in eight lengths: 1M, 3M, 5M, 7M, 10M, 15M, 20M, and 30M to suit rack and adjacent-rack deployments - Hot-pluggable with operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C for commercial data centre environments - Lower power consumption and lighter weight than discrete transceiver and patch cable assemblies

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 compliance guarantees electrical and optical interoperability with any standards-compliant 40G QSFP+ port
• Four independent 10.3125Gb/s optical lanes using 850nm VCSEL transmitters and PIN photodetector receivers over parallel multi-mode fibre
• SFF-8436 QSFP+ MSA mechanical and electrical compliance ensures fit and function in standard QSFP+ cages and host interfaces
• Active optical cable architecture integrates transceivers at both ends, eliminating the need for separate modules and patch cords
• Lower power dissipation and lighter cable weight compared to passive copper DAC at longer reaches, suited to high-density rack environments
• Hot-pluggable design supports insertion and removal without powering down the host platform

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Juniper JNP-40G-AOC-1M?
A: Yes. This cable is a drop-in replacement for the JNP-40G-AOC-1M and other lengths in the series. It meets the same IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 and SFF-8436 QSFP+ MSA standards, provides the same 40Gb/s aggregate data rate over four independent optical lanes, and is plug-and-play compatible with Juniper QSFP+ ports.

Q: Which Juniper platforms and port types support this AOC cable?
A: This cable works in any Juniper switch or router with QSFP+ ports supporting 40Gb/s Ethernet. The cable complies with the QSFP+ MSA and IEEE 802.3ba standards, so compatibility is determined by the presence of a standards-compliant 40G QSFP+ interface rather than specific platform models.

Q: Why use an active optical cable instead of a passive copper DAC for 40G connections?
A: Active optical cables integrate VCSEL-based transceivers at each end, enabling much longer reach than passive copper DAC while maintaining low power consumption and lighter cable weight. AOCs are ideal for connections beyond 7 metres, cross-rack deployments, or environments where cable flexibility and bend radius matter. Passive DAC remains more cost-effective for very short connections under 3 metres.

Q: Are the four optical lanes independent, and can they be used separately?
A: The four 10.3125Gb/s optical lanes operate in parallel to deliver 40Gb/s aggregate throughput, but they are bonded as a single 40G interface at the electrical level. Unlike breakout cables, this QSFP+ to QSFP+ AOC presents as one 40G link on each end and cannot be split into four independent 10G connections. For breakout functionality, a 40G QSFP+ to 4x10G SFP+ breakout AOC is required.

Q: What is the minimum bend radius for this cable, and can it be routed through tight spaces?
A: Multi-mode fibre AOCs typically require a minimum bend radius of 30 to 35mm during installation and 20 to 25mm for long-term static routing. Exceeding these limits risks signal attenuation or fibre damage. The lighter weight and smaller diameter of AOC compared to copper DAC make it well suited to high-density rack cable management, but always respect the minimum bend radius to maintain link integrity.
