Description

The JL485A-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Aruba JL485A. This SFP28 transceiver provides plug-and-play 25 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over multi-mode fibre in Aruba switches with SFP28 ports. - IEEE 802.3by compliant 25GBASE-SR operation guarantees standards-based interoperability on 25G networks - SFP28 form factor, 25 Gb/s data rate, 850nm wavelength, LC duplex connector - Reaches 300m over OM3 multi-mode fibre, 400m over OM4 multi-mode fibre - Digital optical monitoring (DOM) provides real-time access to temperature, voltage, bias current, transmit and receive power - Hot-swappable design allows installation and removal without powering down the host switch - Low power consumption under 1W with VCSEL laser technology

Features

• IEEE 802.3by compliance ensures the transceiver operates as 25GBASE-SR, providing guaranteed interoperability with any standards-compliant 25G SFP28 port without vendor lock-in
• Single-lane 25.78 Gb/s signalling architecture on the SFP28 electrical interface delivers full 25 Gigabit Ethernet throughput without lane bonding or complex PCS mapping
• 850nm VCSEL laser technology provides low power consumption under 1 watt while maintaining sufficient optical budget (minimum 2.7 dB) for reliable 400m OM4 links
• Multimode fibre reach scaling from 300m on OM3 to 400m on OM4 reflects modal bandwidth differences; OM4's 4700 MHz·km bandwidth at 850nm enables the extended distance
• Hot-swappable SFP28 form factor allows field installation and removal without disrupting adjacent ports or requiring host system shutdown, critical for maintaining uptime during upgrades
• Digital diagnostic monitoring exposes real-time operational parameters via I²C interface, enabling proactive link health monitoring and troubleshooting without external test equipment
• RS-FEC support as mandated by IEEE 802.3by clause 108 can be enabled when link conditions require additional error correction, though operation without FEC is also supported

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Aruba JL485A?
A: Yes. The JL485A-BCC provides the same 25GBASE-SR operation over the SFP28 form factor at 850nm with 400m OM4 reach. It is IEEE 802.3by compliant and plug-and-play compatible with any Aruba switch that specifies the JL485A as a supported transceiver.

Q: Which Aruba switch platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in any Aruba switch with SFP28 ports that support 25 Gigabit Ethernet operation. Confirmed compatible platforms include the Aruba CX 8325 and 8360 series switches. Compatibility is determined by the switch having SFP28 slots with 25G capability, not by specific model restrictions.

Q: What is the difference between 25GBASE-SR and 25GBASE-eSR, and does reach differ on OM3 versus OM4 fibre?
A: 25GBASE-eSR is a marketing term for extended short reach; both use the same IEEE 802.3by 25GBASE-SR physical layer specification. The reach difference is due to modal bandwidth: OM3 fibre (2000 MHz·km at 850nm) supports 300m, while OM4 fibre (4700 MHz·km at 850nm) extends reach to 400m. Use OM4 for the full rated distance.

Q: Does this transceiver require Reed-Solomon FEC to be enabled on the host switch?
A: IEEE 802.3by requires 25GBASE-SR transceivers to support RS-FEC (clause 108), but it must also be possible to disable FEC. This transceiver supports both modes. Most 25G optical links over 300 to 400m distances have sufficient signal integrity to operate without FEC, but enabling RS-FEC can improve bit error rate in marginal conditions at the cost of approximately 250 nanoseconds of latency.

Q: Can I mix this transceiver with OEM Aruba optics on the same switch or in the same fibre link?
A: Yes. Because this transceiver is IEEE 802.3by compliant and uses the same 25GBASE-SR PMD specification as the OEM module, it will interoperate seamlessly with any standards-compliant 25G optic at either end of the link, regardless of vendor. The LC duplex connector, 850nm wavelength, and 25.78 Gb/s line rate are all standardized, ensuring compatibility across mixed-vendor deployments.
