Description

The JL283A-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Aruba JL283A. This passive copper breakout cable connects a single 100G QSFP28 port to four independent 25G SFP28 ports and works plug-and-play in Aruba networking platforms. - IEEE 802.3bj 100GBASE-CR4 and IEEE 802.3by compliance ensures reliable 100G to 4x25G breakout operation - 100G QSFP28 to 4x 25G SFP28 configuration over 3 meters of passive copper twinax - 25.78 Gb/s per lane, 100 Gb/s aggregate throughput with eight differential copper pairs - Compliant with SFP28 MSA, QSFP28 MSA, SFF-8402, and SFF-8665 specifications - Low insertion loss and crosstalk construction for reliable high-speed signaling - Passive design requires no external power beyond the host ports

Features

• IEEE 802.3bj and 802.3by compliance guarantees interoperability for 100GBASE-CR4 to 4x 25GBASE-CR operation across multi-vendor environments
• Four independent 25 Gb/s electrical lanes enable true breakout topology where each SFP28 end operates as a separate link with independent negotiation and fault isolation
• Passive copper twinax construction eliminates active electronics, reducing power draw to zero beyond what the host supplies and removing a potential failure point
• Eight differential pairs engineered for low crosstalk and insertion loss maintain signal integrity at 25.78 Gb/s per lane without requiring additional equalization hardware
• Compliant with SFF-8402 and SFF-8665 mechanical specifications ensures consistent insertion force, latch retention, and connector durability across repeated insertions
• Hot-swappable design supports live insertion and removal without powering down upstream switches or disrupting adjacent ports
• Operating range of 0 to 70°C suits standard data center and telecom equipment room thermal profiles

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Aruba JL283A?
A: Yes. The JL283A-BCC is a passive copper breakout cable with identical QSFP28 to 4x SFP28 configuration, 3-meter length, and 100G aggregate data rate. It meets IEEE 802.3bj and 802.3by standards for 100GBASE-CR4 breakout operation and works plug-and-play in Aruba switches with QSFP28 ports configured for breakout.

Q: Which Aruba switches support this breakout cable?
A: This cable works in any Aruba switch with 100G QSFP28 ports that support breakout mode, including AOS-CX switches with the split command enabled on QSFP28 interfaces. Confirm your switch model supports port splitting in the platform documentation, as not all QSFP28 ports on every model are breakout-capable.

Q: Can each of the four 25G lanes run independently at different speeds?
A: No. Each lane operates at its native 25 Gb/s rate as defined by the physical layer. The four SFP28 ends function as independent links with separate autonegotiation and link state, but the electrical signaling is fixed at 25.78 Gb/s per lane. You cannot run one lane at 10G and another at 25G on the same cable.

Q: Does this passive cable require Forward Error Correction to be enabled?
A: FEC requirements depend on the host platform and NOS, not the cable itself. IEEE 802.3by specifies optional FEC for 25GBASE-CR. Many switches enable FEC by default on 25G copper links to improve bit error rate performance. The cable will pass both FEC and non-FEC traffic, but consult your switch documentation for FEC policy on breakout interfaces.

Q: What is the maximum reach for passive copper at these data rates?
A: This cable is 3 meters and represents a practical length for 25 Gb/s per lane passive copper with acceptable signal loss. Passive twinax typically scales to 5 meters at 25 Gb/s, though longer runs see higher insertion loss and may require lower gauge cable. For distances beyond 5 meters at 25G per lane, consider active copper or active optical breakout cables.
