Q: Why does this module require a matching downstream transceiver?
A: BiDi transceivers transmit and receive on different wavelengths over a single fibre strand. This upstream (U) module transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm. It must connect to a downstream (D) module that transmits at 1550nm and receives at 1310nm (such as the GLC-BX40-D-I). The integrated WDM diplexer in each module splits the wavelengths, enabling bidirectional communication. Two upstream modules cannot communicate with each other.

Q: What fibre type and distance limitations apply to the 40km reach specification?
A: The 40km maximum reach applies to standard ITU-T G.652 single-mode fibre (9/125µm SMF) under typical conditions with a 22dB minimum optical budget. Actual distance depends on fibre attenuation, splice loss, connector loss, and any inline components. For links shorter than 10km, an optical attenuator may be required to prevent receiver saturation. OM3 and OM4 multimode fibres are not supported.

Q: Does this industrial-rated module support the same DOM parameters as commercial-temperature SFPs?
A: Yes. DOM functionality per SFF-8472 is fully supported across the entire industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). You can monitor transmit optical power, receive optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage in real time via compatible network operating systems or management platforms. All parameters remain accurate and accessible even at temperature extremes.
