Description

The GLC-BX40-DA-I-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco GLC-BX40-DA-I. This industrial-grade BiDi SFP operates plug-and-play in Cisco platforms with SFP ports, designed for harsh environments with an extended temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. - IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-BX40 compliance guarantees interoperability with standards-compliant equipment - SFP form factor, 1.25Gbps data rate, single-mode fibre, up to 40km reach over 9/125µm SMF - Bidirectional operation: 1490nm Tx, 1310nm Rx via simplex LC connector, must pair with complementary 1310nm Tx / 1490nm Rx upstream transceiver (GLC-BX40-U-I or GLC-BX40-UA-I) - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) per SFF-8472 MSA for real-time diagnostics including optical power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage - Single-strand fibre architecture reduces cabling requirements by 50% compared to dual-fibre links - Industrial temperature rating supports outdoor, industrial automation, transportation, mining, oil and gas, and other extreme-environment applications

Features

• IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-BX compliance ensures link-layer compatibility with Cisco switches, routers, and any standards-compliant 1G BiDi equipment supporting the 1490nm Tx / 1310nm Rx wavelength pair
• Bidirectional WDM architecture transmits and receives on a single fibre strand using integrated wavelength splitter, doubling available capacity on existing single-mode infrastructure without new cable pulls
• Must be deployed in matched pairs: this downstream unit (1490nm Tx / 1310nm Rx) connects only to an upstream unit (1310nm Tx / 1490nm Rx) such as GLC-BX40-U-I or GLC-BX40-UA-I; cannot connect two downstream units
• SFF-8472 DOM function exposes real-time optical Tx power, Rx power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage via management interface for proactive link monitoring and fault isolation
• Industrial temperature rating (-40°C to 85°C case temperature) uses hardened ICs and optical components validated through extended thermal cycling, qualifying the module for outdoor enclosures, factory floors, and unstabilized environments
• Hot-swappable SFP MSA footprint allows field installation and replacement without powering down the host platform, supporting maintenance windows and rapid troubleshooting
• DFB laser transmitter and InGaAs PIN receiver deliver Class 1 laser safety and low power dissipation with typical power budget of 22dB, sufficient for 40km reach over ITU-T G.652 compliant single-mode fibre

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco GLC-BX40-DA-I?
A: Yes. This transceiver matches the GLC-BX40-DA-I specification: SFP form factor, 1.25Gbps data rate, 1000BASE-BX40-DA standard, 1490nm Tx / 1310nm Rx wavelengths, 40km reach over single-mode fibre, and industrial temperature rating. It is plug-and-play compatible in any Cisco platform with SFP ports that supports the original part.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module works in Cisco switches and routers with SFP slots that support 1000BASE-BX BiDi optics, including industrial and enterprise platforms. Compatibility is determined by the presence of an SFP port rated for 1G operation and support for BiDi modules per the platform datasheet. Confirmed platform families include Catalyst, Nexus, ASR, ISR, and IE (Industrial Ethernet) series with appropriate SFP interfaces.

Q: Why must I use this with a GLC-BX40-U-I or complementary upstream transceiver?
A: BiDi transceivers use wavelength-division multiplexing over a single fibre. This downstream unit transmits at 1490nm and receives at 1310nm. The far-end upstream unit must transmit at 1310nm and receive at 1490nm to complete the bidirectional path. Connecting two downstream units (both 1490nm Tx) will not establish a link because neither can receive the other's wavelength.

Q: What is the actual link budget and can I use this at distances shorter than 40km?
A: The module provides approximately 22dB optical budget between minimum Tx power and receiver sensitivity. At shorter distances (under 5km), high received power may saturate the receiver; check the datasheet minimum received power specification. For distances under 3km, an inline attenuator (5-10dB) may be required to stay within the receiver's dynamic range and avoid bit errors.

Q: Does the industrial temperature rating affect optical performance or link stability?
A: No. Industrial-grade components and thermal management maintain stable optical output power, wavelength accuracy, and receiver sensitivity across the full -40°C to +85°C range. The module's laser wavelength, Tx power, and Rx sensitivity are specified and tested at temperature extremes to ensure the link budget remains sufficient for 40km reach regardless of ambient conditions.
