Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco GLC-BX40-D-I?
A: Yes. The GLC-BX40-D-I-BCC is electrically and mechanically compatible with the Cisco GLC-BX40-D-I. It conforms to the same IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-BX40-D standard, uses the same SFP form factor, operates at the same 1550nm Tx / 1310nm Rx wavelength pair, and provides the same 40km reach over single-mode fibre. It will initialise plug-and-play in any Cisco platform that supports the original part.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in Cisco switches and routers with 1GB SFP slots that support 1000BASE-BX standards, including Catalyst 3650, 4500-X, 9200, 9300, and 9500 series switches, Catalyst 8300 and 8500L series routers, and Nexus 9000 series platforms. If your platform supports the Cisco GLC-BX40-D-I or GLC-BX-D form factors, this module will function identically.

Q: What is the difference between the D and U versions of BX40 transceivers?
A: The D (downstream) version transmits at 1550nm and receives at 1310nm, while the U (upstream) version transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm. This wavelength separation enables bidirectional communication over a single fibre strand. You must deploy one D and one U transceiver as a pair at opposite ends of the link. Two D units or two U units cannot communicate with each other because their transmit and receive wavelengths would not align.

Q: Can this industrial-rated transceiver operate in standard commercial temperature environments?
A: Yes. The -40°C to 85°C industrial temperature range is a superset of the 0°C to 70°C commercial range. This transceiver will operate reliably in any commercial data centre or office environment and also supports extended temperature deployments in outdoor cabinets, factory automation systems, or remote cell sites where ambient conditions exceed commercial limits. There is no performance penalty in standard temperature environments.

Q: Does this BiDi transceiver require specialised single-mode fibre, or will standard OS2 fibre work?
A: Standard ITU-T G.652 single-mode fibre (OS2, 9/125µm) is correct and required. The integrated WDM optics handle wavelength multiplexing internally. No external WDM device or specialised fibre type is needed. The 40km reach specification assumes clean LC connectors, low insertion loss, and fibre attenuation within the IEEE 802.3z budget. If your existing SMF infrastructure supports other 1GB long-reach transceivers, it will support this BiDi module.
