Description

The FN-TRAN-SFP+GC-T80-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+GC-T80. This 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ transceiver is plug-and-play compatible with Fortinet systems equipped with SFP+ slots, providing 10 Gbps Ethernet connectivity over standard copper cabling. - IEEE 802.3an compliance guarantees interoperability with any 10GBASE-T compliant infrastructure, including switches, routers, and NICs with RJ-45 interfaces - SFP+ form factor supporting 10 Gbps data rate over Cat6a or Cat7 cable with reach up to 80m, overcoming the 30m limitation of standard 10GBASE-T modules - Extended temperature range from -5°C to 85°C enables deployment in non-climate-controlled environments such as telecom facilities and industrial applications - Auto-negotiation with 10GBASE-T, 5GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, and 1000BASE-T for backward compatibility with existing Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure - Hot-pluggable design with RJ-45 connector provides field serviceability without network downtime - Low power consumption at 2.5W maximum enables dense port configurations without thermal concerns

Features

• IEEE 802.3an defines the physical layer signalling for 10GBASE-T using PAM-16 modulation and Tomlinson-Harashima precoding, enabling full-duplex 10 Gbps operation over four twisted pairs with robust crosstalk and echo cancellation
• Reaches 80m over Cat6a or Cat7 structured cabling by using advanced DSP equalization, extending beyond the typical 30m limit of standard 10GBASE-T SFP+ modules for intra-rack and cross-row connectivity
• Extended temperature specification from -5°C to 85°C supports deployment in environmentally challenging locations including outdoor cabinets, factory floors, and telecom central offices without active cooling
• Auto-negotiation capability allows the module to establish links at 10G, 5G, 2.5G, or 1G depending on the remote endpoint and cable category, protecting investment in Cat5e or Cat6 infrastructure for lower-speed applications
• Hot-pluggable SFP+ footprint with metallic EMI shielding and compact RJ-45 assembly enables tool-free installation and removal during maintenance windows without chassis power-down
• Low 2.5W power budget per port permits high-density 10GBASE-T switch configurations without exceeding system thermal envelopes or requiring supplemental airflow
• Built-in cable diagnostics and link monitoring accessible via the SFP+ MSA 2-wire interface provide real-time visibility into signal quality, pair status, and fault conditions for proactive troubleshooting

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+GC-T80?
A: Yes. This transceiver is electrically and mechanically identical to the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+GC-T80, providing the same 10GBASE-T functionality at 10 Gbps over RJ-45. It complies with IEEE 802.3an and SFF-8431/8432 MSA standards, ensuring plug-and-play compatibility with Fortinet equipment featuring SFP+ slots. The module supports the same 80m reach over Cat6a/Cat7 and extended temperature operation.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module is compatible with any Fortinet switch, firewall, or appliance equipped with SFP+ ports that support copper 10GBASE-T transceivers. The host device must provide SFP+ electrical signalling per SFF-8431 and recognize 10GBASE-T capability. Consult your Fortinet platform documentation to confirm SFP+ copper transceiver support, as not all SFP+ ports support 10GBASE-T due to power or protocol limitations.

Q: Can I use Cat6 cable instead of Cat6a or Cat7 for the full 80m reach?
A: No. The 80m reach specification requires Cat6a or Cat7 shielded or unshielded cable meeting the required bandwidth and alien crosstalk performance. Cat6 cable is limited to approximately 55m for 10GBASE-T due to insufficient bandwidth at 500 MHz. Using Cat6 beyond this distance will result in link errors, reduced throughput, or failure to establish a 10G connection. For distances under 55m, Cat6 may work but is not guaranteed.

Q: What is the latency impact of using 10GBASE-T copper versus fibre or DAC?
A: 10GBASE-T introduces approximately 2 to 3 microseconds of latency per hop due to the DSP processing required for PAM-16 encoding, echo cancellation, and adaptive equalization. Fibre optics and passive DAC cables exhibit sub-microsecond latency. For most enterprise and data center applications this difference is negligible, but latency-sensitive workloads such as high-frequency trading or real-time control systems should evaluate whether this overhead is acceptable.

Q: Does this module support Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) per IEEE 802.3az?
A: Yes. This transceiver complies with IEEE 802.3az, allowing the physical layer to enter low-power idle (LPI) states during periods of reduced traffic. EEE negotiation occurs automatically between link partners if both endpoints support the feature. Power savings depend on traffic patterns, but EEE can reduce idle power consumption significantly in underutilized links. The feature can typically be disabled at the host if deterministic latency is required.
