Description

The FN-TRAN-SFP+ER-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+ER. This SFP+ transceiver plugs into any Fortinet device with SFP+ slots and delivers plug-and-play 10GBASE-ER operation over single-mode fibre. - IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-ER compliance guarantees interoperability with any standards-based 10G network equipment - SFP+ form factor with 1550nm wavelength transmitter and duplex LC connector for OS2 single-mode fibre - 40km reach over SMF with 11.3 Gbps data rate for long-distance campus, metro, or data centre interconnect applications - Digital diagnostic monitoring (DOM) function provides real-time access to temperature, voltage, and optical power via I2C interface as per SFF-8472 - Hot-pluggable design enables field installation and replacement without powering down the host device - Low power consumption (1.5W maximum) and commercial temperature range (0 to 70 degrees C) for reliable operation in standard network environments

Features

• IEEE 802.3ae compliance ensures the module will interoperate with any vendor platform supporting 10GBASE-ER, eliminating vendor lock-in and enabling multi-vendor network designs
• The 1550nm wavelength experiences significantly lower attenuation over G.652 single-mode fibre compared to 1310nm or 850nm optics, enabling the full 40km reach without intermediate amplification
• DOM functionality accessible via SFF-8472 two-wire serial interface allows real-time monitoring of temperature, voltage, bias current, and transmit/receive optical power for proactive link health management
• Hot-pluggable SFP+ MSA-compliant design permits module installation and removal without host system shutdown, reducing maintenance windows and enabling rapid field deployment
• Uncooled DFB laser transmitter architecture at 1550nm delivers a typical 15dB optical budget, providing sufficient margin for patch panel losses, connector attenuation, and fibre splice loss over 40km spans
• Commercial temperature range (0 to 70 degrees C) and 1.5W maximum power dissipation suit standard indoor switch and router environments without requiring additional cooling infrastructure
• Minimum 2m cabling distance as per IEEE 802.3ae, with links beyond 30km classified as engineered links requiring link budget calculation and potential attenuation for distances under 20km

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+ER?
A: Yes. The FN-TRAN-SFP+ER-BCC provides the same SFP+ form factor, 10GBASE-ER protocol support, 11.3 Gbps data rate, 1550nm wavelength, and 40km reach over single-mode fibre as the Fortinet original. It is plug-and-play compatible with any Fortinet device that specifies the FN-TRAN-SFP+ER transceiver, including switches, routers, and firewalls with SFP+ slots.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module works in any Fortinet device with SFP+ slots that support 10GBASE-ER operation. Fortinet specifies this transceiver for systems with SFP+ interfaces operating at 10 Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fibre. If your Fortinet equipment accepts the FN-TRAN-SFP+ER, this module is compatible.

Q: What fibre type and link budget does this transceiver require?
A: This module requires OS1 or OS2 single-mode fibre (G.652 standard) and will not operate over multi-mode fibre. It provides approximately 15dB optical budget, sufficient for 40km at the typical 0.35 dB/km attenuation of SMF plus connector and splice losses. Links beyond 30km are classified as engineered links per IEEE 802.3ae and should be validated with a link budget calculation. For distances under 20km, a 5dB attenuator may be required to avoid receiver overload.

Q: How do I access the digital diagnostic monitoring data?
A: The module implements SFF-8472 DOM via a two-wire I2C serial interface at address A0h and A2h. Most Fortinet NOS environments expose DOM data through CLI commands that query temperature, voltage, transmit bias current, transmit power, and receive power in real time. These parameters enable proactive detection of fibre degradation, connector contamination, or transmitter ageing before link failure occurs.

Q: Can this module operate at shorter distances or with lower-speed protocols?
A: Yes. The transceiver chipset supports data rates from 1.25 to 10.31 Gbps, allowing backward compatibility with Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps) and other SONET/SDH rates if the host port is configured accordingly. However, IEEE 802.3ae specifies a minimum 2m cabling distance for ER modules. For distances under 2m, the high optical power may require attenuation or a different transceiver type to avoid receiver saturation.
