Description

The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR. This QSFP28 optical transceiver is designed to work plug-and-play in Fortinet systems with QSFP28 slots, including FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms. - Compliant with IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 and QSFP28 MSA standards, guaranteeing compatibility with multi-vendor equipment - QSFP28 form factor delivering 100 Gbps aggregate throughput over multi-mode fibre using 850 nm wavelength via MPO-12 connector - Supports transmission up to 70 m over OM3 fibre or 100 m over OM4 fibre - Four independent parallel optical channels, each operating at 25 Gbps, for a combined 100 Gbps data rate - Digital diagnostics monitoring (DOM) support for real-time optical parameter tracking - Operating temperature range 0 to 70 degrees Celsius, hot-swappable for deployment flexibility

Features

• IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 compliance ensures interoperability across multi-vendor QSFP28 platforms and guarantees electrical interface compatibility
• Four-lane parallel optics architecture with independent 25 Gbps VCSEL transmitters and PIN receivers per channel, enabling 100 Gbps aggregate throughput over 8-fibre MPO ribbon cable
• 1.9 dB minimum link budget supports 70 m over OM3 fibre and 100 m over OM4 fibre, calculated per standard fibre attenuation and connector loss
• Hot-swappable module operates on single 3.3 V supply with maximum 3.5 W power consumption, suitable for high-density deployments
• Real-time digital diagnostics via I2C interface provide access to optical power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage parameters for proactive link monitoring
• QSFP28 MSA compliant form factor with guide pin alignment ensures proper seating in host equipment and supports MTP/MPO-12 connector standard
• Operating temperature range 0 to 70 degrees Celsius suits standard data centre and enterprise rack environments without extended temperature requirement

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR?
A: Yes. The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR-BCC is built to the same IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 and QSFP28 MSA standards as the original Fortinet module. It matches the form factor, electrical interface, data rate, wavelength, and connector type, ensuring plug-and-play operation in any Fortinet system with QSFP28 slots.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver is designed for Fortinet systems with QSFP28 slots, including FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms. Any Fortinet device with a 100 Gbps QSFP28 port operating at 0 to 70 degrees Celsius will support this module. Confirm your specific model has QSFP28 slots by checking the datasheet or front panel markings.

Q: What fibre type and reach does this support, and how do OM3 and OM4 differ?
A: This transceiver supports multi-mode fibre with 850 nm VCSEL optics. It reaches 70 m over OM3 fibre or 100 m over OM4. The difference is fibre bandwidth: OM4 has lower modal dispersion and higher bandwidth at 850 nm, allowing the full 100 m reach with the module's 1.9 dB link budget. OM3 reach is limited by higher attenuation and dispersion at 100 Gbps.

Q: Can I break out this 100G SR4 module into four 25G connections?
A: Yes, if your host platform supports breakout configuration. Each of the four optical lanes operates independently at 25 Gbps, so a breakout MPO-to-LC cable can split the connection into four discrete 25GBASE-SR links. Verify that your switch or router firmware supports 100G-to-4x25G breakout mode on the QSFP28 port before deploying this configuration.

Q: Does this transceiver require forward error correction (FEC) to operate?
A: No. 100GBASE-SR4 over multi-mode fibre at these distances does not mandate FEC, as the link budget and fibre quality are sufficient for reliable operation without it. FEC may be enabled by the host for additional margin, but it is not required by the IEEE 802.3bm standard for SR4 optics at 70 m or 100 m reach.
