Description

The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-DR-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP28-DR. This QSFP28 transceiver is plug-and-play with Fortinet systems featuring QSFP28 slots, providing 100 Gigabit Ethernet throughput over single-mode fiber. - IEEE 802.3cd 100GBASE-DR compliance guarantees interoperability with standards-based 100G infrastructure - QSFP28 form factor delivering 103.1 Gbps over single-mode fiber using 1310nm wavelength with duplex LC connectors - Up to 500m reach over SMF (subject to fibre quality and link budget) - Single-lambda PAM4 modulation with integrated gearbox converting 4x 25Gbps NRZ electrical signals to 1x 100Gbps PAM4 optical signal - DOM/DDM support for real-time monitoring of optical power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage - Interoperates with 400GBASE-DR4 transceivers via breakout cables for flexible network architecture

Features

• IEEE 802.3cd 100GBASE-DR compliance ensures standards-based interoperability with multi-vendor 100G single-mode infrastructure and forward compatibility with 400G-DR4 systems via breakout cables
• Single-lambda PAM4 architecture operates at 53.125 GBaud over 1310nm band, using onboard DSP gearbox to convert four 25Gbps NRZ electrical lanes (CAUI-4 interface) into one 100Gbps PAM4 optical lane, reducing fibre count by 75% compared to parallel SR4 or PSM4 topologies
• Host-based FEC (Reed Solomon RS(528,514) per IEEE 802.3bj) is required to correct pre-FEC bit error ratio and ensure reliable system operation at PAM4 signalling rates
• EML transmitter and PIN photodiode receiver with integrated CDR circuitry maintain signal integrity across the 3 dB optical link budget, suitable for typical data centre leaf-spine distances well under 500m
• Hot-swappable QSFP28 MSA form factor with duplex LC/UPC connector simplifies deployment in dense 100G switch fabrics, reducing cabling complexity and fibre management overhead
• DDM functionality accessible via I2C interface exposes real-time parameters including transmit and receive optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage for proactive link health monitoring
• RoHS compliant with 0 to 70°C operating case temperature range and 4.5W maximum power dissipation, designed for controlled data centre environments with appropriate thermal management

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP28-DR?
A: Yes. This transceiver is engineered to the same IEEE 802.3cd 100GBASE-DR specification, QSFP28 MSA form factor, and electrical interface (CAUI-4) as the Fortinet original. It is plug-and-play in Fortinet systems with QSFP28 slots, delivering 103.1 Gbps at 1310nm over single-mode fiber to 500m.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in any Fortinet device with QSFP28 100G-capable ports, including data centre switches, routers, firewalls, and security gateways. Compatibility is determined by the port supporting IEEE 802.3cd 100GBASE-DR and the QSFP28 electrical interface, not by specific model families. Confirm your platform supports 100GBASE-DR or consult your system documentation.

Q: Why does 100GBASE-DR require host FEC, and what type is needed?
A: PAM4 modulation at 53.125 GBaud inherently produces a higher pre-FEC bit error ratio (around 2.4 x 10^-4) than NRZ signalling. Reed Solomon RS(528,514) FEC, defined in IEEE 802.3bj and implemented by the host platform, corrects these errors to achieve the required post-FEC BER of better than 1 x 10^-12. FEC must be enabled on both link ends for reliable operation.

Q: Can this transceiver interoperate with 100GBASE-LR4 or 100GBASE-CWDM4 modules?
A: No. 100GBASE-DR uses single-lambda PAM4 at 1310nm, while LR4 and CWDM4 use four-wavelength WDM with NRZ modulation. These are fundamentally incompatible optical formats. However, 100GBASE-DR does interoperate with 400GBASE-DR4 transceivers using MTP-to-LC breakout cables, as both use the same single-lambda PAM4 PHY per lane.

Q: What is the actual usable reach, and how is the 500m figure determined?
A: The 500m reach assumes a 3 dB minimum optical link budget over standard G.652 single-mode fiber with typical attenuation of approximately 0.4 dB/km at 1310nm, plus connector and splice losses. Actual reach depends on fiber quality, number of connections, bend radius, and cleanliness. Most data centre leaf-spine links are well under 100m, providing substantial margin. For links approaching 500m, verify link budget with an OTDR or power meter.
