Description

The FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR. This transceiver operates plug-and-play in Fortinet systems with QSFP+ or QSFP28 slots, delivering 40 Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fiber using the IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 standard. - 40GBASE-LR4 compliance ensures interoperability with any standards-compliant 40G interface over single-mode fiber - QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps aggregate throughput (4 x 10Gbps lanes), duplex LC connector - Four CWDM wavelengths (1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, 1331nm) multiplexed over a single fiber pair, 10km reach over OS2 single-mode fiber - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support provides real-time access to optical power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage via I2C interface - Hot-swappable, RoHS compliant, operates 0°C to 70°C commercial temperature range - Also supports OTU3 and Infiniband QDR/DDR data rates for flexibility in telecom and HPC environments

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 compliance guarantees interoperability with any vendor's standards-compliant 40G long-reach interface, eliminating vendor lock-in for single-mode fiber links
• Four-lane CWDM architecture uses wavelength division multiplexing at 1271/1291/1311/1331nm to transmit 40Gbps over a single duplex fiber pair, simplifying cabling compared to parallel optics
• DFB laser array with integrated MUX/DEMUX and APD receiver array enables low-power operation (typically under 3.5W) while maintaining signal integrity over the full 10km distance
• Digital diagnostics via I2C interface expose per-lane optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage for proactive link monitoring and rapid troubleshooting
• Hot-swappable design supports installation and removal without powering down the host system, enabling maintenance and upgrades during operation
• Suitable for QSFP+ and QSFP28 slots in Fortinet platforms, providing flexibility for 40G connectivity in data center, enterprise core, and campus network deployments
• Also supports OTU3 (43.01Gbps) and Infiniband QDR/DDR rates for telecom transport and high-performance computing applications beyond Ethernet

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR?
A: Yes. This transceiver is a direct plug-and-play replacement for the FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR. It matches the same QSFP+ form factor, 40GBASE-LR4 standard, 40Gbps data rate, CWDM wavelengths, 10km reach over single-mode fiber, and duplex LC connector specified by Fortinet. It operates identically in Fortinet equipment.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module works in any Fortinet system with QSFP+ or QSFP28 slots, as confirmed by the FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR datasheet. This includes FortiGate security appliances and FortiSwitch models equipped with 40G QSFP+ ports. The slot must support 40G Ethernet operation.

Q: What fiber type and patch cable do I need for 10km reach?
A: You need OS2 single-mode fiber (G.652 standard) with duplex LC connectors. The 10km reach assumes a link power budget of at least 6.5dB. OS1 fiber also works but is typically specified for shorter premises runs. The four CWDM wavelengths travel together over a single fiber pair.

Q: Can I use this in a 4x10G breakout configuration?
A: No. The 40GBASE-LR4 standard uses four CWDM wavelengths multiplexed together and does not support breakout to four independent 10G links. For 4x10G breakout, you need a different transceiver architecture like 40GBASE-SR4 with an MPO breakout cable. This module is designed for native 40G point-to-point links only.

Q: Does this transceiver require Forward Error Correction (FEC) to be enabled?
A: No. The IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 specification does not mandate FEC for 10km links over single-mode fiber. The optical power budget and receiver sensitivity are designed to achieve the required bit error rate without FEC. However, some host platforms may enable FEC by default, which is compatible and can provide additional margin.
