Description

The FG-TRAN-QSFP+SR-BIDI-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FG-TRAN-QSFP+SR-BIDI. This transceiver is designed for plug-and-play compatibility with Fortinet systems that have QSFP+ or QSFP28 slots. - IEEE 802.3ba compliant 40GBASE-SR-BD BiDi transceiver that guarantees interoperability with standards-based 40GbE infrastructure - QSFP+ form factor with duplex LC connector, 40Gb/s data rate, multi-mode fibre operation using 850nm/900nm wavelengths - Supports up to 100m on OM3 fibre or 150m on OM4 fibre for short-reach data centre and campus connectivity - Includes DOM support for real-time monitoring of optical parameters including temperature, voltage, and optical power levels - Bi-directional operation over duplex LC fibre allows reuse of existing 10G cabling infrastructure for 40G migration - Operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees Celsius for standard commercial networking environments

Features

• Compliant with IEEE 802.3ba 40GbE XLPPI electrical specification and QSFP+ MSA SFF-8436, ensuring interoperability with standards-based 40G ports across multi-vendor networks
• Bi-directional multiplexing architecture that internally converts 4x10G electrical lanes into 2x20G optical channels, transmitting and receiving over a single duplex LC fibre
• Four electrical lanes each operating at 10.3125 Gbps with 64b/66b encoding, aggregating to 40Gbps throughput over duplex multi-mode fibre infrastructure
• Enables reuse of installed duplex LC cabling originally deployed for 10G, eliminating the need for MPO-12 parallel fibre upgrades when migrating to 40G
• Hot-swappable design with single +3.3V power supply allows field replacement without system downtime or power cycling
• Digital diagnostic monitoring via I2C interface provides access to real-time transceiver parameters per QSFP+ MSA specification
• Wavelength pairing uses 850nm and 900nm on separate fibres to achieve full-duplex 40Gbps transmission without crosstalk or interference

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FG-TRAN-QSFP+SR-BIDI?
A: Yes. This transceiver is a plug-and-play compatible replacement for the Fortinet FG-TRAN-QSFP+SR-BIDI. It matches the QSFP+ form factor, 40Gb/s data rate, 850nm/900nm BiDi wavelengths, and IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR-BD standard compliance, ensuring it functions identically in any Fortinet system with QSFP+ or QSFP28 slots.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in Fortinet systems with QSFP+ or QSFP28 slots that support 40G operation. If your Fortinet switch, router, or firewall has a port that accepts the FG-TRAN-QSFP+SR-BIDI in its compatibility list, this module will function in that port.

Q: Why does this BiDi transceiver use both 850nm and 900nm wavelengths?
A: The BiDi design transmits 850nm on one fibre while simultaneously receiving 900nm, then reverses the pairing on the second fibre. This wavelength separation prevents optical crosstalk and allows full-duplex 40Gbps transmission over just two fibres instead of the eight fibres required by standard 40GBASE-SR4 with MPO-12 connectors. Both transceivers in a link must use matched BiDi wavelength pairs.

Q: What is the reach difference between OM3 and OM4 fibre with this module?
A: This transceiver supports up to 100m on OM3 multi-mode fibre and up to 150m on OM4 multi-mode fibre. The reach difference is determined by the modal bandwidth characteristics of the fibre type. OM4 has higher modal bandwidth at 850nm, which allows for longer distances at 40Gbps data rates. Actual reach depends on fibre quality, connector loss, and link budget.

Q: How does the internal lane architecture of this BiDi transceiver differ from 40GBASE-SR4?
A: This BiDi module receives four 10.3125 Gbps electrical lanes from the host, then internally multiplexes them into two 20Gbps optical channels using wavelength-division multiplexing. Standard 40GBASE-SR4 modules transmit all four lanes in parallel over eight fibres via an MPO-12 connector. The BiDi approach achieves the same 40Gbps aggregate throughput while using only duplex LC connectivity, but it cannot support 4x10G breakout applications.
