Description

The FG-TRAN-QSFP-4xSFP-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Fortinet FG-TRAN-QSFP-4xSFP. This active optical breakout cable provides plug-and-play connectivity for Fortinet systems with QSFP+ ports, enabling 40GB to 4x10GB breakout connectivity using multi-mode fibre. - SFF-8436 (QSFP+) and SFF-8431 (SFP+) compliance ensures standard mechanical and electrical compatibility across vendor platforms - 40GBASE-SR4 aggregate data rate broken out to four independent 10GBASE-SR lanes, each operating over 850nm multi-mode fibre - MPO connector on QSFP+ end to 4x LC duplex connectors on SFP+ ends, supporting OM3 multi-mode fibre infrastructure - Active optical technology eliminates copper signal degradation and EMI concerns while reducing cable weight and improving airflow density in racks - Available in 1M and 5M lengths to support intra-rack and adjacent-rack connectivity without excess slack - Hot-pluggable design with DDM support for real-time monitoring of optical power and cable health per lane

Features

• SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 MSA compliance guarantees mechanical fit and electrical signalling compatibility across multi-vendor QSFP+ and SFP+ port implementations
• Four independent 10GBASE-SR optical lanes operate simultaneously at 850nm over OM3 or OM4 fibre, each lane electrically isolated with separate transmit and receive paths
• Active optical technology integrates laser drivers and receiver electronics within each connector housing, eliminating passive copper attenuation and enabling consistent signal integrity across all cable lengths
• Hot-swap capability allows insertion and removal under power without disrupting adjacent ports or requiring system reboot, critical for maintenance windows in production environments
• DDM functionality exposes per-lane optical transmit power, receive power, and temperature telemetry via I2C interface, enabling proactive fault isolation before link failure
• MPO-to-LC breakout topology enables migration from 40G backbone switches to legacy 10G distribution or access layer equipment without requiring parallel infrastructure rewiring

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Fortinet FG-TRAN-QSFP-4xSFP?
A: Yes. This cable meets the same SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 form factor and electrical standards as the Fortinet reference part, operates at the same 40GBASE-SR4 aggregate rate with 850nm optics over OM3 multi-mode fibre, and provides plug-and-play compatibility with Fortinet QSFP+ and SFP+ ports.

Q: Which Fortinet platforms support this breakout cable?
A: This cable is compatible with any Fortinet platform featuring QSFP+ ports (40GE) on one end and SFP+ ports (10GE) on the other, including FortiGate and FortiSwitch models with applicable interface slots. Confirm your specific model has the required QSFP+ and SFP+ port types.

Q: Can I connect all four SFP+ ends to different switches or must they connect to the same device?
A: All four SFP+ lanes are electrically independent and can connect to four different switches, servers, or storage devices. Each lane operates as a discrete 10GBASE-SR link with its own transmit and receive path. The QSFP+ host port must support 4x10G breakout mode in hardware and be configured accordingly.

Q: What is the maximum reach on OM3 versus OM4 multi-mode fibre?
A: Each 10GBASE-SR lane supports up to 100 meters on OM3 fibre and up to 150 meters on OM4 fibre per IEEE 802.3 specifications. Actual reach depends on fibre quality, connector insertion loss, and cumulative link budget. OM4 fibre offers lower attenuation and higher modal bandwidth for longer distances or margin.

Q: Does this cable require any FEC or special host configuration beyond breakout mode?
A: No additional FEC is required. The cable operates using standard 10GBASE-SR encoding (64B/66B) on each lane without requiring host-side FEC or rate adaptation. The host switch must support QSFP+ 4x10G breakout mode and have it enabled in configuration, but no special optics profiles or custom tuning are necessary.
