Description

The CAB-Q-Q-xM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Arista CAB-Q-Q-0.5M series. This passive twinax copper cable provides plug-and-play connectivity for Arista switches with QSFP+ ports, supporting 40 Gigabit Ethernet over very short distances within racks and across adjacent racks. - IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-CR4 compliant, guaranteeing interoperability with any standards-compliant QSFP+ port - QSFP+ form factor with integrated copper twinax assembly, supporting aggregate 40Gb/s data rate across four 10G lanes - Passive copper design requires no external power, offering low latency and minimal power consumption (max 1.5W per end) - Available in six lengths: 0.5M, 1M, 2M, 3M, 4M, and 5M to suit intra-rack and short inter-rack deployments - SFF-8436 MSA compliant with hot-swappable capability for seamless installation and replacement - Commercial operating temperature range (0 to 70 degrees C) suitable for standard data centre environments

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-CR4 compliance ensures native interoperability with any vendor QSFP+ port operating at 40G, eliminating concerns about vendor lock-in or proprietary coding
• Four-lane architecture with each lane operating at 10.3125Gb/s, enabling 40Gb/s aggregate throughput with balanced signal distribution and minimal crosstalk
• Passive copper design eliminates active electronics and associated power draw, delivering sub-microsecond latency and typical power consumption under 1.5W per connector
• Twinax cable construction provides superior electromagnetic shielding compared to standard twisted pair, maintaining signal integrity across the full length range without repeaters or optical conversion
• Hot-swappable connectors allow live insertion and removal without disrupting adjacent links, supporting non-disruptive maintenance and capacity expansion
• SFF-8436 MSA compliance guarantees mechanical fit and I2C communication compatibility, enabling EEPROM reading for inventory management and cable identification in network management systems
• Commercial temperature rating (0 to 70C) suits standard data centre environments with typical HVAC infrastructure, avoiding the cost premium of extended-range components

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Arista CAB-Q-Q-0.5M?
A: Yes. This cable is a direct replacement for Arista CAB-Q-Q-0.5M and related length variants. It meets IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-CR4 specifications, uses the QSFP+ form factor, and delivers 40Gb/s aggregate data rate across four 10G lanes. The cable is plug-and-play compatible with Arista QSFP+ ports and will be recognised by the switch without configuration changes.

Q: Which Arista platforms support this cable?
A: This cable works in any Arista switch with QSFP+ ports capable of 40G operation. That includes the 7050, 7060, 7250, 7280, 7300, 7500, and 7800 series platforms. The requirement is simply a QSFP+ port running at 40G speed. If your switch port accepts a standard QSFP+ module and operates at 40 Gigabit Ethernet, this cable will function.

Q: Can I use this cable for 4x10G breakout connections?
A: No. This is a QSFP+ to QSFP+ cable designed for 40G point-to-point links between two QSFP+ ports. Breakout to 4x10G SFP+ ports requires a specialised QSFP+ to 4xSFP+ breakout cable with different internal lane mapping. If you need to connect one 40G QSFP+ port to four separate 10G SFP+ ports, contact us for a breakout cable variant.

Q: What is the maximum reach and why are copper DAC cables limited to these lengths?
A: The maximum available length is 5 metres. Passive copper DAC cables rely on the electrical signal integrity of twinax copper without active amplification. Beyond 5 metres, attenuation and crosstalk degrade the signal below the receiver sensitivity threshold required for 10.3125Gb/s per lane operation. For longer distances, consider active copper cables (7 to 10 metres with signal regeneration) or optical transceivers with fibre.

Q: Does this cable require Forward Error Correction (FEC) to operate reliably?
A: No. Passive copper DAC cables operating under the 40GBASE-CR4 standard are designed to meet bit error rate requirements without FEC when used within their specified length limits. The twinax construction and passive electrical characteristics provide sufficient signal quality for error-free transmission. FEC is typically required for longer reach optical links or marginal fibre conditions, not for short copper interconnects.
