Blue Cable Co 100GbE QSFP28 active optical cables (AOC) deliver reliable 100Gb/s connectivity between QSFP28 ports over multi-mode fibre, compatible with NVIDIA Mellanox platforms. VCSEL-based optics are integrated directly into the QSFP28 connectors at each end, enabling reaches well beyond passive copper DAC cables while remaining hot-pluggable and plug-and-play. Available in lengths from 3m to 30m, all variants feature an LSZH jacket for data centre fire safety compliance and support selectable per-lane retiming for signal integrity over longer runs.

A1: These AOC cables are compatible with NVIDIA Mellanox switches and NICs that have QSFP28 ports supporting 100GbE connections. They are designed as compatible replacements for the OEM MFA1A00-C series. Contact our team to confirm fit for a specific platform before ordering.

Q2: What is the difference between this AOC and a 100G passive DAC cable — which should I use?
A2: A passive DAC cable uses copper and is limited to around 5m. This AOC uses optical fibre with active VCSEL transceivers built into both QSFP28 connectors, supporting reaches up to 30m in this range. AOCs are the right choice when you need more reach than copper allows, prefer lighter and more flexible cabling, or require LSZH fire-rated cable in your installation environment.

Q3: Do these AOC cables require separate QSFP28 transceivers to be installed?
A3: No. The optical transceivers are built into the QSFP28 connectors at both ends of the cable. The cable installs as a single unit directly into two QSFP28 ports — no separate modules are needed.

Q4: What does selectable retiming mean, and does it affect how I deploy these cables?
A4: Retiming re-cleans the signal at each end, which helps maintain signal integrity over longer runs at 25Gb/s per lane. It is selectable per lane via the I2C management interface. On NVIDIA Mellanox platforms, retiming configuration is typically handled automatically during link-up. For deployments on non-Mellanox equipment, manual configuration may be needed.

Q5: Are these cables suitable for environments with LSZH cabling requirements?
A5: Yes. All variants use an LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jacket, limiting toxic gas and smoke emission in the event of a fire. Note that these cables are LSZH rated, not plenum (OFNP) rated — confirm your site's specific cabling standards before installation if plenum rating is a requirement.
