Description

The AOC-Q-Q-100G-xM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Arista AOC-Q-Q-100G-1M. This QSFP28 to QSFP28 active optical cable provides plug-and-play compatibility with Arista switches supporting 100GBASE QSFP28 ports. - IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 compliance ensures electrical and optical interoperability across vendor platforms - QSFP28 form factor with 4x25 Gbps NRZ lanes over multi-mode fibre, aggregate 100 Gbps bandwidth - 850 nm VCSEL transmitter array and PIN receiver array for low-power operation - Available in nine lengths from 1 to 30 meters for flexible rack and data centre installations - Operating case temperature 0 to 70 degrees C, maximum power consumption under 3.5 W - Hot-pluggable with built-in CDR circuits on transmit and receive channels

Features

• IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 compliance guarantees electrical and optical interoperability with any standards-compliant QSFP28 port, including mixed-vendor environments
• Four independent 25.78125 Gbps NRZ electrical lanes per direction using VCSEL transmitter arrays at 850 nm, delivering aggregate 100 Gbps throughput with low BER
• Built-in Clock Data Recovery (CDR) circuits on both transmit and receive channels ensure signal integrity over the full length range without external retiming
• Multi-mode fibre architecture supports reach up to 70 m over OM3 or 100 m over OM4 fibre without additional signal conditioning or amplification
• Lighter weight and smaller bend radius than equivalent copper DAC cables simplify high-density rack installations and cable management
• Hot-pluggable design with QSFP28 MSA electrical interface compliance supports live insertion and removal without powering down the host switch

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Arista AOC-Q-Q-100G-1M?
A: Yes. This cable matches the QSFP28 form factor, 100 Gbps data rate, and IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 standard of the Arista AOC-Q-Q-100G-1M. It provides plug-and-play operation in any Arista switch with QSFP28 ports that support 100GBASE active optical cables.

Q: Which Arista platforms support this cable?
A: This cable is compatible with any Arista switch or router that provides QSFP28 ports supporting 100GBASE-SR4 or 100G Ethernet. This includes platforms with native 100 Gbps QSFP28 interfaces. Consult your platform documentation to confirm QSFP28 AOC support.

Q: Can I mix this cable with other vendor AOCs on the same link?
A: No. Active optical cables are not transceiver-to-transceiver links. Each end of the AOC contains an integrated optical module, so both ends must be from the same cable assembly. You cannot connect one end of this AOC to a separate transceiver or a different AOC.

Q: Does this cable require Forward Error Correction (FEC) on the host?
A: Yes. IEEE 802.3bm 100GBASE-SR4 requires Reed-Solomon FEC (RS-FEC, also known as Clause 91 FEC) to achieve the specified bit error rate. The host platform must enable FEC on the port. Most modern 100G platforms enable this by default for SR4 optics and AOCs.

Q: What is the difference between using an AOC versus a DAC cable for 100G connections?
A: AOCs use internal optical transceivers and multi-mode fibre, enabling longer reach (up to 100 m on OM4) with lower weight and better bend radius compared to passive copper DAC cables, which are typically limited to 3 to 5 meters. AOCs consume slightly more power (around 3.5 W) due to the active optics, whereas passive DACs consume no power but generate more heat due to electrical loss at 100 Gbps data rates.
