Which HPE ProLiant server? DL, ML and MicroServer explained

HPE ProLiant names tell you the form factor and size at a glance. Use this map to narrow the range before you configure.

DL: rack servers

  • DL20 and DL320: 1U single socket servers for branch offices, edge and light virtualisation
  • DL360: 1U dual socket server for dense compute and virtualisation
  • DL380: 2U dual socket server, the most popular choice for virtualisation, databases and storage heavy workloads
  • DL385 and other AMD models: AMD EPYC based servers for high core counts

ML and MicroServer: tower servers

  • MicroServer: compact, quiet server for small offices and file sharing
  • ML30 and ML110: entry towers for a few business apps
  • ML350: dual socket tower for virtualisation in offices without a rack

Generation. The Gen number, such as Gen11 or Gen12, shows the platform generation. Parts, memory and drive carriers are matched to the generation, so check it before ordering upgrades.

Configure the rest. Choose processors, memory, drives, a RAID controller, network adapters and dual power supplies. HPE upgrade parts usually have part numbers ending in -B21. See our guide to server part numbers.
