What Is a Point-to-Point Wireless Bridge and When Do You Need One?

If you've ever needed to get a network connection from one building to another without running a cable, a point-to-point wireless bridge is probably the right answer. But the name is a bit technical, and it's easy to confuse with a Wi-Fi extender or a mesh system.

This article explains what a point-to-point bridge is, how it works, when you need one, and what to check before you buy.

What is a point-to-point wireless bridge?

A point-to-point (PTP) wireless bridge is a pair of outdoor units that create a high-speed wireless link between two locations. One unit goes at each end, and they talk directly to each other using focused radio signals.

The result is essentially a wireless ethernet cable. Whatever is plugged into the network at one end becomes available at the other end, across a distance that would be impractical to cable.

The key difference between a PTP bridge and a standard Wi-Fi router or extender is directionality. A Wi-Fi router broadcasts signals in all directions, which means it loses strength quickly as it spreads out. A PTP bridge concentrates all of its power into a narrow beam aimed directly at the other unit, which is why it can cover distances that normal Wi-Fi cannot.

Think of it this way: a Wi-Fi router is like a lightbulb illuminating a room. A point-to-point bridge is like a torch aimed at a specific target. Same power source, very different reach.

How does it work?

The setup is straightforward. You mount one unit at your main building, typically close to your router or network switch, and connect it via ethernet. You mount the second unit at the remote building, where you want the connection to arrive. Both units are aimed at each other and powered on.

Once the link is established, the two units behave like an ethernet cable between the two buildings. Your network traffic flows across the wireless link transparently. Devices at the remote end see the same network as devices at the main building.

At the remote end, you can plug in whatever you need: a Wi-Fi access point to broadcast wireless coverage, a network switch to connect multiple wired devices, a security camera, a printer, or anything else that uses ethernet.

What does line of sight mean and why does it matter?

Line of sight means there are no physical obstructions in the direct path between the two units. No buildings. No dense trees. No hills or ridges. The two units need to be able to see each other, as if you were shining a torch from one to the other.

This is the most important thing to check before installing a PTP bridge. If there is a solid obstruction in the path, the link will either not work at all or will perform poorly. Unlike a 4G or 5G signal that bounces and reflects, a PTP bridge relies on a clean direct path.

Vegetation is worth noting separately. A few small branches in the path is usually manageable, but dense tree coverage will degrade the link. Also consider whether trees are likely to grow into the path over time, as this may affect your mounting height.

Quick line of sight check: stand at one end and look directly at the intended mounting point on the other building. If you can see it clearly with no obstructions in the way, you have line of sight. If in doubt, mount both units higher.

How far can a point-to-point bridge reach?

This depends on the hardware, but enterprise-grade PTP bridges are capable of ranges that far exceed what most Australian rural and commercial properties require.

Vendor datasheets quote maximum ranges achieved under ideal conditions and at higher transmit power than Australian regulations permit. ACMA sets strict limits on transmit power in the 5 GHz band, so a realistic and reliable planning figure in Australia is around 1 km to 1.5 km for a kit like the Bridge-in-a-Box. That comfortably covers almost every shed, outbuilding and building-to-building job on an Australian property. The limiting factor is almost always line of sight, not distance.

When do you actually need a point-to-point bridge?

A PTP bridge is the right solution when:

  • The distance between buildings is more than 100 metres, making a cable run impractical or expensive
  • Running underground cable would require significant trenching across a paddock, road, or other difficult terrain
  • You need more bandwidth or reliability than a consumer Wi-Fi extender or mesh node can provide
  • You need the connection to carry traffic other than Wi-Fi, such as security cameras, wired devices, or a full network extension
  • You want a permanent, weather-resistant installation rather than a temporary workaround

It is not the right solution when:

  • The building is close enough for a CAT6 ethernet cable run (under 100 metres). A wired connection is always more reliable than wireless
  • There is no clear line of sight and raising the mounting height on both ends would not solve it
  • You only need to cover a small area inside one building. A Wi-Fi access point or extender is simpler and cheaper for that job

Common use cases for PTP wireless bridges in Australia

Wi-Fi for a shed, workshop, or outbuilding

The most common use case on rural and acreage properties. The bridge carries the internet connection from the house to the shed, where a Wi-Fi access point provides wireless coverage inside the building. Security cameras at remote locations

A very common use case on farms, rural properties, and commercial sites. Gate cameras, shed cameras, and paddock cameras can be connected back to a central NVR or monitoring system via a PTP bridge. This avoids running long cable runs and allows high-resolution IP camera footage to be transmitted reliably. The bridge does not care what data is flowing across it, so cameras work just as they would if they were hard-wired.

Connecting a granny flat or secondary dwelling

Rather than paying for a separate internet connection for a granny flat or secondary building on the same property, a PTP bridge can extend the existing connection. This is often significantly cheaper than a second NBN or Starlink service and provides the same network access.

Business sites with multiple buildings

Warehouses, depots, manufacturing sites, and other multi-building commercial properties often use PTP bridges to connect buildings that are too far apart for ethernet cable. This allows a single network and internet connection to serve the whole site without the cost of running conduit and fibre between buildings.

Farm and agricultural applications

Machinery sheds, grain silos, pump stations, and other agricultural infrastructure can all be connected back to the main property network via PTP bridges. This supports remote monitoring of equipment, connectivity for farm management software, and network access for workers at remote sites.

1. Does a point-to-point bridge work with any internet connection?

Yes. The bridge connects to your router or network switch via ethernet, so it works with Starlink, NBN, cable, fibre, or any other internet service. It does not care what is providing the connection.

2. Do both units need to be the same brand?

For a PTP bridge, yes. The two units need to be a matched pair configured to talk to each other. The Cambium Bridge-in-a-Box comes with both units pre-paired, so this is handled for you. Mixing brands is generally not recommended as they use different radio protocols and will not link reliably.

3. Can I use a PTP bridge to connect two offices in different buildings?

Yes, this is a common commercial use case. As long as there is a clear line of sight between the buildings, a PTP bridge can carry the full network connection between them. You would connect the bridge into each building's network switch as if it were an ethernet cable between the two sites.

4. What happens to the connection if it rains or there is a storm?

Heavy rain can cause minor signal attenuation on very long links, but for typical outbuilding distances of a few hundred metres the impact is negligible. 5. Can I use a point-to-point bridge for CCTV cameras at a remote location?

Yes, and this is one of the most common use cases. IP cameras connect to the bridge at the remote end via ethernet, and the footage is carried back across the link to your NVR or monitoring system. All camera functions work normally, including PTZ control, motion detection, and remote viewing.
