How to Extend NBN Wi-Fi to a Shed or Outbuilding

The problem turns up on acreage blocks, hobby farms, and suburban properties with large backyards alike. You have a working NBN connection in the house. The shed, workshop, or outbuilding is somewhere out the back. And no matter what you try, you cannot get a reliable Wi-Fi signal out there.

Unlike Starlink, where the dish and router sit in one known location, NBN connections arrive at your property through a range of different technologies. FTTP, FTTN, HFC, FTTC, Fixed Wireless. Each one has a slightly different setup inside your home, and each one determines what you can and cannot connect to when extending your network to an outbuilding.

First: which NBN connection type do you have?

This matters because different NBN technologies deliver the connection to your home differently, which affects where you plug in a wireless bridge and what adapter or equipment you may need.

You can find your connection type in your NBN provider's app, by checking your physical NBN hardware, or by entering your street address into the official NBN Co Check Address tool. Here is what each type means for your setup:

Why Wi-Fi extenders and mesh systems do not work at this distance

Wi-Fi extenders and mesh nodes

A Wi-Fi extender needs to receive a usable signal from your router before it can rebroadcast it. On suburban blocks where the shed is 30 to 50 metres from the house, a well-placed extender can sometimes bridge the gap. Beyond that, particularly where there are metal shed walls, corrugated iron roofing, or fencing in the path, the signal degrades too quickly for an extender to work reliably.

Mesh systems are better than single extenders but face the same fundamental limit. Each node needs to be within reliable wireless range of the previous one, and the bandwidth available at each hop drops with distance and interference. A mesh node halfway across the backyard may improve things marginally, but it rarely solves the problem cleanly at distances over 80 to 100 metres.

Powerline adapters

Powerline adapters transmit network data through your home's electrical wiring. They are a practical solution in some indoor scenarios, but they have a specific limitation that makes them unsuitable for most shed setups in Australia.

Powerline adapters only work reliably when both units are on the same electrical phase and circuit. In most Australian properties, the house and an outbuilding are on separate electrical supplies. They may share the same meter or come from the same switchboard, but the physical wiring path between them is long enough that powerline performance drops significantly or fails entirely. Metal conduit between buildings also degrades the signal.

Underground ethernet cable

Burying ethernet cable is the most reliable wired option for short distances. CAT6 cable runs cleanly up to 100 metres without signal loss. For a shed that is 20 to 80 metres from the house on a suburban block, this is often the simplest and cheapest solution if you are willing to dig.

Beyond 100 metres, standard ethernet cable cannot carry the signal reliably without active equipment in between. The trenching also becomes expensive and disruptive on larger blocks, and the cable needs to be properly installed in conduit to protect it from ground moisture and mechanical damage over time.

For distances over 100 metres, or where trenching is impractical, a point-to-point wireless bridge is the clean solution. It creates a wireless link between the two buildings that behaves like an ethernet cable.

We recently completed this exact type of job for a rural property where the outbuilding was 500 metres from the main house. The same approach works equally well for suburban and peri-urban properties at shorter distances. The setup involves two Cambium products working together.

The bridge delivers a wired ethernet connection to the shed. To get Wi-Fi inside the building, you plug a Wi-Fi access point into that connection. The Cambium XV2-21X is a compact dual-band Wi-Fi 6 unit that covers a typical shed or workshop from a single ceiling or wall mount.

Powers the XV2-21X access point at the shed via PoE from a standard 240V outlet if no PoE switch is present.

How it connects to your NBN setup

The connection into the house-end bridge unit comes from a spare LAN port on your router. Refer to the connection type table earlier in this article for exactly which device your router plugs into for your NBN type. The bridge sits downstream of the router, the same way a wired computer or printer would.

Here is the full signal path:

  1. NBN arrives at your home via your NTD, HFC box, NCD, or VDSL2 modem depending on connection type
  2. Your router connects to the NBN device and distributes the connection inside the house
  3. An ethernet cable runs from a spare LAN port on your router to the house-end bridge unit mounted outside
  4. The bridge transmits wirelessly to the shed-end unit
  5. The shed-end bridge outputs an ethernet connection inside the shed
  6. The XV2-21X access point connects to that ethernet port and broadcasts Wi-Fi inside the shed
  7. Devices in the shed connect to the XV2-21X, on the same network as the house or a separate one

One important note for FTTN users: your modem-router integrates the modem and router into one device. The LAN ports on the back of that combined unit are where the bridge connects. There is no separate NBN box to deal with.

The one thing you must check: line of sight

A point-to-point bridge requires an unobstructed path between the two units. No buildings, no dense trees, no hills. The two units need to be able to see each other directly.

On suburban and peri-urban blocks this is usually straightforward since the buildings are on flat ground. Common obstructions to watch for include boundary fences with solid panels rather than open pickets, large established trees between the house and shed, or the shed being located behind a secondary structure.

Line of sight check: stand at the shed and look directly at the point on the house where the bridge unit would mount. If you can see it with nothing in the way, you have line of sight. If trees or a fence partially block the path, raise the mounting height on one or both ends. Even a metre of extra height on a roof mount can clear most suburban obstructions.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

1. Can I extend NBN to a shed with a Wi-Fi extender?

Only if the shed is within about 50 to 80 metres of the house and the signal between the two points is strong enough for the extender to pick up. Beyond that range, or where there are walls, metal roofing, or other obstacles in the path, an extender will not work reliably. For distances over 100 metres a point-to-point wireless bridge is the correct solution.

2. Does this work with all NBN connection types?

Yes. The bridge connects to your router or modem via ethernet, so it works regardless of whether you are on FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, HFC, or Fixed Wireless NBN. The NBN technology type only affects how the connection arrives at your modem. Once it is in your router, the bridge handles it the same way.

3. How fast will the Wi-Fi be at the shed?

The bridge carries a Gigabit ethernet connection between the two buildings, so the wireless link itself is not the bottleneck. The speed you get at the shed will depend on your NBN plan speed, the performance of the XV2-21X access point, and how many devices are connected. For most household and workshop uses it will feel identical to Wi-Fi inside the house.

4. What if my shed is on a separate electrical circuit?

That is fine. Powerline adapters need to share an electrical circuit, but a point-to-point wireless bridge does not. It uses its own radio link, not the electrical wiring. Each unit just needs a 240V power source at its end, which can be completely separate.

5. Does it work on Starlink instead of NBN?
