How to Extend Starlink Wi-Fi to a Shed or Outbuilding
If you have Starlink at your house and you've tried to get a signal out to a shed, workshop, or outbuilding, you already know the problem. The internet works perfectly inside the house. The moment you walk out the back, it disappears. And the further away from the building, the worse it gets.
This is one of the most common networking questions we get from people on rural and acreage properties in Australia. You've gone through the effort of getting Starlink installed, you've got a great connection, and now you just want to use it somewhere other than the main house.
The good news is there's a clean solution. We recently completed exactly this job for a rural property where the outbuilding was roughly 500 metres from the house, too far for any Wi-Fi extender to reach. Here's what we used and how it works.
Why normal Wi-Fi extenders don't work at distance
A Wi-Fi extender works by picking up your existing Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasting it. It sounds simple, and for extending coverage inside a house or to a garage attached to the building, it works fine.
The limiting factor here is range. Default consumer routers, such as Starlink's built-in router, are only built for single-building coverage. In the open air, you might only get 50 to 80 metres of usable signal. By 100 metres, it is too weak for a regular home extender to grab. At 200 metres, the unassisted signal disappears entirely. At 500 metres, there is nothing left to extend unless you upgrade to dedicated outdoor point-to-point gear.
Mesh systems have the same limitation. They're designed to hop signal between units inside or immediately around a single property, not across open paddocks or between separate buildings hundreds of metres apart.
Running underground ethernet cable is an option for short distances but for only up to about 100 metres, CAT6 will do the job cleanly. Beyond that, the cable runs get expensive, require trenching across the property through a licensed electrician, and can be impractical depending on the terrain.
The right tool for distances over 100 metres between buildings, where a cable run isn't practical, is a point-to-point (PTP) wireless bridge.

What is a point-to-point wireless bridge?
A point-to-point wireless bridge uses two matched outdoor units, one at each end, to create a high-speed wireless link between two locations. Think of it as an invisible ethernet cable in the air.
Each unit has a directional antenna that focuses its signal directly at the other unit. This is very different from a standard Wi-Fi router or extender, which broadcasts in all directions and loses strength quickly. A PTP bridge concentrates all of its power into a narrow beam between the two endpoints, which is why it can cover distances that would be impossible for normal Wi-Fi.
Once the bridge is running, it passes your network connection from one end to the other. At the far end, in this case the shed, you plug in a standard Wi-Fi access point, and your devices connect to that exactly as they would to any normal Wi-Fi network.
One important requirement: the two units need a clear line of sight. No buildings, trees, or terrain in the path between them. On most rural and acreage properties this isn't a problem, but it's worth checking before you order.
The solution we used: Cambium Bridge-in-a-Box + Wi-Fi 6 access point
For the 500-metre outbuilding job, we used the following two Cambium products:

Pre-paired is the key word here. Both radios come factory-configured to talk to each other. You mount one at the house, connect it to your Starlink router via ethernet, mount the other at the shed, and they find each other and establish the link. There's no complex radio configuration required on your end.

2. Cambium XV2-21X Wi-Fi 6 Indoor Access Point (SKU: XV2-21X0B00-RW)
The bridge delivers the internet connection to the shed but that just gives you a network port at the shed end, not Wi-Fi. To get Wi-Fi inside the building, you plug a Wi-Fi access point into the bridge's ethernet port.
We used the Cambium XV2-21X Wi-Fi 6 access point for this. It's a compact, ceiling-mountable unit that delivers dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) coverage throughout the building. For a shed or workshop, one unit is usually enough to cover the whole space.

The XV2-21X access point is powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet). If you don't have a PoE switch at the shed, the Cambium power injector gives you a clean way to power it directly from the wall.

How the complete setup works
Here's the full signal path once everything is installed:
- Starlink dish and router at the house, connected to the internet as normal
- Ethernet cable from the Starlink router to the Bridge-in-a-Box unit mounted outside the house
- The house-end bridge unit transmits the connection wirelessly across the property
- The shed-end bridge unit receives it and outputs it via ethernet inside the shed
- The XV2-21X access point connects to that ethernet port, powered by the PoE injector
- Devices in the shed connect to the XV2-21X access point via Wi-Fi on the same network as the house, or a separate SSID if preferred
From a user's perspective, it feels like normal Wi-Fi. You connect to the access point in the shed and you're online. The bridge in the middle is invisible to devices and it just carries the ethernet connection across the gap.

What you need for this setup
Before you order, check the following:
- Clear line of sight between the house and the outbuilding. No buildings, dense trees, or significant terrain in the direct path between the two mounting points
- A power source at the shed. The PoE injector needs a standard 240V outlet
- An ethernet port or adapter on your Starlink router. Gen 2 Starlink dishes require the Starlink Ethernet Adapter (sold separately by Starlink) to access a wired ethernet port
- A mounting location on each building. The bridge units need to be aimed at each other and secured to a wall, pole, or roof bracket
Not sure if you have line of sight? Stand at the shed and look back at the house. If you can clearly see the mounting point where the bridge unit would go with no obstructions in the way, you have line of sight. If it's borderline, raise the mounting height on one or both ends.
