For distances approaching the upper limit, verify your link budget accounts for connector insertion loss, splice loss, and fibre attenuation to maintain adequate receive power margin.

Q: Can I read the optical power levels from this transceiver while the link is active?
A: Yes. This transceiver supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), also called Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), which exposes real-time transmit power, receive power, temperature, supply voltage, and laser bias current via the I2C interface. Most managed switches and network operating systems can query these parameters to monitor link health, detect degraded fibre, or troubleshoot intermittent connectivity without physical intervention.

Q: Does this transceiver support auto-negotiation or do I need to force the port speed?
A: The transceiver complies with IEEE 802.3z auto-negotiation for 1000BASE-X. In most cases, both ends will auto-negotiate to 1000 Mbps full-duplex without manual configuration. However, if deploying in a 10G SFP+ port running at reduced speed, you may need to manually configure the host port to 1000 Mbps, as many 10G interfaces do not auto-detect 1G optics by default.
