Q: Why must this be used with a Type B BiDi transceiver, and what happens if I use two Type A modules?
A: BiDi transceivers use different TX and RX wavelengths on the same fibre. This Type A module transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm. The opposite end must use a Type B module that transmits at 1550nm and receives at 1310nm. Pairing two identical Type A modules will result in no link, as both ends would transmit on the same wavelength the other cannot receive.

Q: What fibre type and link budget does this module require for full 40km reach?
A: This module is specified for ITU-T G.652 single-mode fibre. Actual reach depends on total link loss including fibre attenuation, splice loss, connector loss, and dispersion penalty remaining within the optical power budget. For marginal links or shorter distances, verify link budget calculation: total available budget (TX power minus RX sensitivity) must exceed total link loss.

Q: Can I access DOM parameters in real time, and what do they indicate about link health?
A: Yes. This module supports SFF-8472 Digital Diagnostic Monitoring accessible via I2C interface. You can monitor TX optical power, RX optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage. Declining RX power or rising bias current over time may indicate dirty connectors, fibre degradation, or impending laser failure, allowing proactive maintenance before link failure.
