For platforms with special airflow, power, or EOS version requirements, consult the Arista Transceiver and Cable Guide for your specific switch or router model.

Q: What is the difference in reach between OM3 and OM4 fibre with this module?
A: OM3 fibre (2000 MHz·km modal bandwidth at 850nm) supports up to 300m reach. OM4 fibre (4700 MHz·km modal bandwidth at 850nm) extends reach to 400m. The higher modal bandwidth of OM4 reduces modal dispersion at 10G data rates, allowing longer cable runs. OM2 fibre (500 MHz·km) is limited to approximately 82m and is not recommended for new 10G deployments.

Q: Does this transceiver require forward error correction (FEC) on the host port?
A: No. IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-SR does not use FEC. All 10GbE and lower data rates operate without FEC, unlike 25G and 100G links where FEC is typically required unless enhanced-performance optics are used. The host port should be configured for native 10G operation without FEC encoding.

Q: Can I use this module at lower data rates such as 1000BASE-SX?
A: Not unless the host port supports multi-rate or rate-select operation. Standard 10GBASE-SR modules are fixed-rate devices optimized for 10.3125 Gbps. Some Arista platforms support dual-rate SFP+ ports that can negotiate between 1G and 10G, but this is a platform capability, not a module feature. Arista also offers dedicated rate-adapting transceivers for multi-speed applications. Check your platform documentation for rate-select support.
