Description

The QSFP-4X10G-LR-S-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-4X10G-LR-S. This QSFP+ transceiver delivers plug-and-play compatibility with Cisco platforms supporting 40GBASE-PLR4 interfaces, enabling both native 40G links and 4x10G breakout connectivity. - Compliant with QSFP+ MSA and IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-PSM4, guaranteeing seamless interoperability with Cisco infrastructure and 10GBASE-LR interfaces - QSFP+ form factor, 40 Gigabit Ethernet throughput, 1310nm wavelength, up to 10km over G.652 single-mode fiber - MPO-12 female connector with APC interface for 12-fiber parallel optical links or 4x10G breakout mode using parallel to duplex LC breakout cables - Four independent 10 Gbps lanes, each compliant with 10GBASE-LR specifications for guaranteed interoperability when breaking out to four 10G-LR interfaces - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support provides real-time access to operating parameters including optical power, temperature, and voltage - Hot-swappable design with operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees Celsius for commercial deployments

Features

• Four independent optical lanes each operating at 10 Gbps with 10GBASE-LR compliance, enabling full specification range interoperability when breaking out to four separate 10G interfaces over duplex LC fiber
• Supports both native 40G parallel optics over 12-fiber MPO cable and 4x10G breakout applications, allowing flexible deployment in data center aggregation, enterprise core, and campus network scenarios
• Requires MPO-12 APC (Angled Physical Contact) connectors on patch cords, distinct from PC or UPC connector requirements for other 40G QSFP modules, to minimize back reflection on single-mode fiber
• Optimized for interoperability with 10GBASE-LR SFP+ and SFP-10/25G-LR-S (operating in 10G mode), ensuring seamless migration from existing 10G infrastructure to 40G uplinks
• 7 dB minimum optical budget supports 10km reach over standard G.652 single-mode fiber with typical industry fiber attenuation, suitable for inter-building and campus backbone links
• Hot-swappable QSFP+ form factor with real-time DOM monitoring enables in-service insertion and troubleshooting without network downtime
• Does not support FCoE, designed exclusively for Ethernet and optical transport applications including 40G Ethernet, OTU3, and OTU3e2

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco QSFP-4X10G-LR-S?
A: Yes. The QSFP-4X10G-LR-S-BCC is engineered to the same QSFP+ MSA and IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-PSM4 specifications as the Cisco QSFP-4X10G-LR-S. It operates at 1310nm over single-mode fiber with identical 10km reach and four 10 Gbps lanes. The module is plug-and-play compatible, initializing and performing identically to the OEM transceiver without requiring configuration changes or forcing commands.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module is compatible with Cisco platforms featuring QSFP+ ports that support 40GBASE-PLR4 or 4x10G breakout. Compatible platforms include Nexus 9300 and 9500 series data center switches, Catalyst 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600 series campus switches, and other devices with QSFP+ interfaces supporting 40G Ethernet or 4x10G lane breakout functionality.

Q: What type of breakout cable is required for 4x10G connectivity, and can I mix breakout with native 40G links?
A: For 4x10G breakout, you need a 12-fiber parallel MPO-12 (APC) to 4x duplex LC breakout cable. Each duplex LC output connects to a 10GBASE-LR interface. Note that this module specifically requires APC-polished MPO connectors, unlike other 40G QSFP optics that use PC or UPC connectors. Each lane operates independently at 10 Gbps, allowing you to connect to four separate 10G ports on remote devices. Native 40G links require 12-fiber MPO parallel fiber with MPO-12 female connectors on both ends.

Q: What is the optical power budget and how does it determine the actual reach?
A: This module provides a minimum optical budget of 7 dB. Actual reach depends on fiber quality, connector loss, and splice loss. With typical G.652 single-mode fiber attenuation of approximately 0.4 dB/km at 1310nm and allowing for connector insertion loss, links up to 10km are achievable. For precise link engineering beyond 8km or in environments with older fiber or multiple patch panels, calculate total path loss including connectors and splices to ensure it remains within the 7 dB budget.

Q: Does this module support FEC, and is it compatible with OTU3 applications beyond Ethernet?
A: This module does not support FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet). However, it does support multiple Layer 1 applications including 40G Ethernet at 41.25 Gbps line rate, OTU3 at 43.018 Gbps, OTU3e2 at 44.58 Gbps, and STM-256 at 39.81 Gbps. The four-lane architecture operates across a data rate range of 39.81 to 44.8 Gbps. FEC support depends on the host platform's capabilities; the transceiver itself is transparent to FEC encoding applied by the host equipment.
