Description

The QSFP-4SFP10G-CUxM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-4SFP10G-CU1M series. This passive copper breakout cable operates over twinaxial cable and requires no additional power, connecting a single 40GB QSFP+ port to four independent 10GB SFP+ ports with plug-and-play compatibility on Cisco platforms. - Compliant with SFF-8436 (QSFP+) and SFF-8431 (SFP+) MSA standards, ensuring interoperability with Cisco equipment and other MSA-compliant hosts - 40GBASE-CR4 to 4x 10GBASE-CU architecture: each SFP+ lane delivers up to 10.3125 Gbps for a total aggregate bandwidth of 41.25 Gbps - Passive copper construction eliminates the need for external power, reducing power consumption and heat generation compared to active solutions - Hot-swappable connectors with latch-release mechanisms enable seamless installation and removal without network downtime - Available in five lengths (1M, 2M, 3M, 4M, 5M) to support flexible rack-to-rack and intra-rack deployments - Protocol-agnostic design supports 40 Gigabit Ethernet, QDR InfiniBand, and Fibre Channel applications

Features

• SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 compliance guarantees MSA-standard electrical interface and mechanical fit across Cisco and third-party platforms with QSFP+ and SFP+ ports
• Four independent 10.3125 Gbps SFP+ lanes from a single 40 Gbps QSFP+ port enable flexible breakout topologies for connecting 40GB uplinks to multiple 10GB devices
• Passive copper design operates without power or active electronics, delivering ultra-low latency and simplified thermal management in dense rack environments
• Twinaxial 30AWG construction with robust zinc die-cast housings and latch mechanisms provides superior EMI shielding and secure connector retention under repeated insertion cycles
• Hot-swappable operation supports in-service installation and removal with no risk to adjacent ports or active traffic flows
• Protocol-agnostic architecture supports 40 Gigabit Ethernet, QDR InfiniBand, SAS, and Fibre Channel over the same physical layer, maximizing deployment flexibility across mixed-protocol fabrics

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco QSFP-4SFP10G-CU1M?
A: Yes. The QSFP-4SFP10G-CUxM-BCC is designed as a drop-in replacement for the Cisco QSFP-4SFP10G-CU1M series. It conforms to the same SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 standards, matches the 40GBASE-CR4 to 4x 10GBASE-CU electrical specification, and supports the same data rates and passive copper architecture. It is plug-and-play compatible with Cisco platforms.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this breakout cable?
A: This cable is compatible with Cisco platforms that feature QSFP+ ports and support 40GBASE-CR4 passive copper breakout mode. Compatibility is determined by the host switch or router having standards-compliant QSFP+ and SFP+ ports per SFF-8436 and SFF-8431, not by specific model restrictions. Verify that your platform supports passive copper breakout cables in its transceiver compatibility matrix.

Q: Can I use different length SFP+ ends or mix active and passive cables on the same QSFP+ port?
A: No. This is a fixed-length breakout cable with all four SFP+ connectors factory-terminated at the same distance from the QSFP+ host connector. All four lanes are passive copper, and each lane operates independently at 10.3125 Gbps. You cannot mix this passive cable with active optical breakout cables on the same QSFP+ port.

Q: What is the maximum distance for passive copper breakout cables and why is it limited?
A: Passive copper breakout cables are limited to 5 meters maximum due to signal attenuation and crosstalk in the twinaxial medium at 10+ Gbps data rates. Beyond 5M, passive copper cannot reliably maintain the signal integrity required for 10.3125 Gbps per lane without bit errors. For distances beyond 5M, use active optical cables (AOC) or optical transceivers with fibre, which Cisco offers in lengths up to 30M for breakout applications.

Q: Does this cable support Forward Error Correction (FEC) or require specific host configuration?
A: No FEC is required or applicable. Passive copper direct attach cables operate at the physical layer with no encoding or FEC overhead. The cable itself is transparent to the data stream. Host configuration is typically automatic: when the cable is inserted, the QSFP+ and SFP+ ports should auto-negotiate or be manually configured for the appropriate 40GB and 10GB interfaces. No special driver or firmware is needed beyond MSA-compliant QSFP+ and SFP+ support.
