Q: Which Dell platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in any Dell Networking switch or router with 40G QSFP+ ports that support 40GBASE-SR-BD BiDi transceivers over multimode fiber. Compatibility is determined by the port supporting the IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE electrical interface and QSFP+ MSA form factor, rather than specific platform models.

Q: How does BiDi wavelength pairing work, and why does it matter?
A: BiDi transceivers transmit and receive on both fibers simultaneously using complementary wavelengths. One transceiver sends at 850nm and receives at 900nm on each fiber, while the far-end transceiver reverses this (transmits 900nm, receives 850nm). Passive WDM filters inside each module separate the wavelengths. Both ends must use BiDi transceivers with matching wavelength pairs. You cannot connect a BiDi module to a standard 40GBASE-SR4 or any non-BiDi transceiver.

Q: What is the actual optical power budget, and does it guarantee 150m reach?
A: The module has a minimum guaranteed optical budget of 2 dB. Actual reach depends on fiber quality, connector losses, and patch panel insertion loss. With typical OM4 fiber (3.0 dB/km attenuation) and clean connectors, 150m is achievable. OM3 fiber supports 100m. Distance is calculated conservatively, and many installations exceed these values, but link budget analysis is recommended for marginal cases or if connector count is high.

Q: Can I use this in breakout mode to connect to four 10G ports?
A: No. Unlike 40GBASE-SR4 modules with MPO connectors that support 4x10G breakout, BiDi transceivers use duplex LC and transmit a single 40G signal over two fibers using wavelength multiplexing. The module does not support lane breakout. It is designed exclusively for native 40G links between two BiDi-capable ports and enables reuse of duplex fiber infrastructure originally deployed for 10G.
