Description

The QSFP-40G-SR-BD-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-40G-SR-BD. This BiDi transceiver uses bidirectional transmission over duplex LC multi-mode fibre to deliver 40GB throughput, enabling reuse of existing 10GB duplex MMF infrastructure for 40GB migration. - IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR-BD and QSFP+ MSA compliance guarantee interoperability with standard 40GB Ethernet platforms - QSFP+ form factor with two 20GB channels using 832-918nm wavelength range over duplex LC MMF - 100m reach on OM3 fibre, 150m on OM4 and OM5 laser-optimized multi-mode fibre - Operates at 10.3125 Gbps per electrical channel with 64b/66b encoding across four internal lanes - Digital diagnostic monitoring via I2C interface for real-time temperature, voltage, optical power, and bias current parameters - Hot-swappable with single 3.3V power supply and standard operating temperature range 0 to 70 degrees C

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba-2010 40GBASE-SR-BD compliance ensures compatibility with 40GB Ethernet equipment using XLPPI electrical interface
• Two independent 20GB bidirectional optical channels transmit and receive simultaneously on the same fibre strand, aggregating to 40GB over duplex LC cable
• Internally multiplexes four 10.3125 Gbps electrical lanes with 64b/66b encoding into two 20GB optical channels, each operating in the 832-918nm range
• Link budget of 1.9 dB supports 100m on OM3 and 150m on OM4/OM5 fibre per IEEE specifications, with BER better than 1E-12 at maximum distance
• Real-time DDM access to transmit/receive optical power, module temperature, bias current, and supply voltage via 2-wire I2C serial interface per QSFP+ MSA
• Hot-swappable 38-pin edge connector design allows field insertion and removal without powering down the host platform

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco QSFP-40G-SR-BD?
A: Yes. The QSFP-40G-SR-BD-BCC is a plug-and-play replacement for the Cisco QSFP-40G-SR-BD. It matches the 40GBASE-SR-BD specification with the same QSFP+ form factor, duplex LC connector, 832-918nm wavelength operation, and 40 Gbps data rate. It complies with IEEE 802.3ba-2010 and QSFP+ MSA standards, ensuring drop-in compatibility with any Cisco platform that accepts the QSFP-40G-SR-BD.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver works in any Cisco platform with QSFP+ slots that support 40GBASE-SR-BD, including Nexus and Catalyst switches. The host must provide a 40GB Ethernet XLPPI electrical interface per IEEE 802.3ba. Consult your switch datasheet or Cisco compatibility matrix to confirm 40GBASE BiDi support for your specific model.

Q: Why does BiDi use 850nm and 900nm wavelengths on the same fibre?
A: Each module transmits on one wavelength (850nm or 900nm) and receives on the other, enabling simultaneous bidirectional transmission on a single fibre strand. One module in the link uses 850nm Tx/900nm Rx while its partner uses 900nm Tx/850nm Rx. This allows full 40GB duplex operation over just two fibres instead of the eight fibres required by 40GBASE-SR4 with MPO connectors.

Q: Can I mix OM3 and OM4 fibre in the same link?
A: Yes, but maximum reach is limited by the lower-spec fibre. If you connect OM3 at one end to OM4 at the other, treat the link as OM3 and observe the 100m distance limit. For full 150m reach, both ends must use OM4 or OM5 laser-optimized multimode fibre. OM2 is not supported for this transceiver.

Q: What happens if I hot-swap this module while the port is active?
A: The module supports hot-swap operation per QSFP+ MSA. Insertion or removal while the host is powered does not damage the module or host. The module asserts IntL until the data-not-ready bit clears, typically within 2 seconds of power-on. Link will re-establish automatically once both transceivers complete initialization and achieve optical lock. No host reboot is required.
