Q: Can I breakout this LR4 transceiver to 4 x 10G links?
A: No. The 40GBASE-LR4 standard uses four wavelengths multiplexed onto a single duplex fibre pair. The wavelengths cannot be split into separate 10G links without substantial optical demultiplexing equipment. For 4 x 10G breakout over single-mode fibre you need a parallel optic like a QSFP-40G-PLR4 with an MPO connector and breakout cabling.

Q: What fibre type and grade is required for the full 10km reach?
A: This transceiver requires OS2 single-mode fibre (G.652 specification). The 10km distance assumes a maximum link loss budget that includes fibre attenuation, connector loss, and any splices. Using higher-loss fibre grades or additional connectors in the link path will reduce the supported distance. OM3 or OM4 multi-mode fibre is not compatible with this module.

Q: Does this transceiver support forward error correction (FEC)?
A: The IEEE 40GBASE-LR4 standard does not require FEC at the physical layer for 10km links over single-mode fibre, and this transceiver operates per that specification. FEC configuration, if available, is determined by the host platform. For OTN applications (OTU3), FEC is typically implemented at higher protocol layers by the host system rather than within the transceiver itself.
