Description

The QSFP-100G-FR-S-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-100G-FR-S. This single-lambda QSFP28 transceiver delivers plug-and-play 100 Gigabit Ethernet over standard duplex single-mode fibre infrastructure. - Complies with 100G Lambda MSA and IEEE 802.3cd, guaranteeing interoperability with 100GBASE-FR endpoints and backward compatibility with 400GBASE-DR4 via breakout cables - QSFP28 form factor with 103.125 Gbps data rate, 1310nm wavelength, up to 2km reach over G.652 single-mode fibre with duplex LC connectors - Single-lane 100G PAM4 optical transmission with onboard KP4 FEC and gearbox converting 4x25G NRZ electrical host interface to 50 Gbaud PAM4 optical signal - DOM support provides real-time monitoring of optical power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage via I2C interface per QSFP28 MSA - Simplifies cabling versus 4-wavelength CWDM4 solutions while maintaining equivalent 2km reach, ideal for data centre interconnects and enterprise campus backbones

Features

• 100G Lambda MSA and IEEE 802.3cd compliance ensures interoperability with any 100GBASE-FR transceiver and enables direct connection to IEEE 400GBASE-DR4 ports via 1x100G breakout cables without bandwidth sacrifice
• Single-wavelength PAM4 architecture eliminates wavelength multiplexing complexity found in CWDM4 or LR4 designs while achieving equivalent 2km reach over duplex fibre, reducing component count and insertion loss sensitivity
• Onboard DSP gearbox seamlessly converts 4x25.78 Gbps NRZ electrical lanes (CAUI-4) from host ASIC to a single 50 Gbaud PAM4 optical lane at 106.25 Gbps, supporting platforms with 25G SerDes without requiring 50G-capable host interfaces
• KP4 Forward Error Correction processes up to 5.8% overhead to maintain post-FEC BER of 1e-12 across the full 2km link budget, essential for reliable PAM4 signal integrity over single-mode fibre with typical 0.4 dB/km attenuation at 1310nm
• Hot-swappable QSFP28 MSA form factor with duplex LC/UPC optical interface and SFF-8636 compliant electrical pinout, enabling in-service replacement without network disruption or special tooling
• Digital diagnostics accessible via I2C provide real-time TX/RX optical power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage per QSFP28 MSA specification for proactive link health monitoring and troubleshooting
• Commercial temperature range (0 to 70°C) and maximum 4.5W power consumption suit standard data centre and enterprise switch environments with typical QSFP28 cooling and power delivery capabilities

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the QSFP-100G-FR-S?
A: Yes. The QSFP-100G-FR-S-BCC is electrically and optically identical to the Cisco QSFP-100G-FR-S. Both conform to the 100G Lambda MSA 100GBASE-FR specification with the same QSFP28 form factor, 1310nm wavelength, 2km reach, and PAM4 modulation. This module is plug-and-play in any Cisco platform that supports the QSFP-100G-FR-S.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver is compatible with Cisco switches and routers that support 100GBASE-FR optics and provide QSFP28 ports with host-based KP4 FEC capability. Specific platform compatibility depends on software version and FEC support. Consult the Cisco 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix for your platform and NOS release to confirm QSFP-100G-FR-S support.

Q: What fibre type is required and what affects the 2km reach?
A: This module requires G.652 single-mode fibre with duplex LC connectors. Actual reach depends on total link loss budget: the transceiver provides approximately 4 dB budget to accommodate fibre attenuation (typically 0.35-0.4 dB/km at 1310nm), connector insertion loss (0.3-0.5 dB per mated pair), splice loss, and ageing margin. Poor quality connectors, dirty end-faces, or higher attenuation fibre will reduce maximum distance. KP4 FEC must be enabled on the host to achieve the full 2km specification.

Q: Can this module interoperate with 400G DR4 transceivers?
A: Yes. The 100GBASE-FR specification is designed to interoperate with IEEE 400GBASE-DR4 transceivers via 1x100G to 4x100G fibre breakout cables. Each 100G lane of a 400G-DR4 module uses the same PAM4 modulation and wavelength as 100G-FR, allowing you to connect a single 400G-DR4 port to four separate 100G-FR ports without speed reduction. This is a key advantage for asymmetric data centre topologies or staged 400G migration.

Q: Does this module require specific FEC configuration on the host?
A: Yes. The 100GBASE-FR standard mandates RS-FEC (Reed-Solomon Forward Error Correction), specifically KP4 FEC per IEEE 802.3 Clause 134 (also called RS(544,514) FEC). The FEC processing occurs in the host ASIC, not inside the transceiver. You must enable FEC on the switch port or the link will not establish or will experience high error rates. PAM4 modulation relies on FEC to correct bit errors and achieve the required post-FEC BER of 1e-12. Most platforms auto-negotiate FEC when a 100G-FR module is detected, but verify FEC is active after link-up.
