Description

The QSFP-100G-B20U4-I-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20U4-I. It is plug-and-play in Cisco platforms with QSFP28 100G ports and has been tested in our Sydney lab to ensure compatibility. - QSFP28 form factor delivering 100Gbps over a single strand of G.652 Single-Mode Fiber - Supports up to 20km reach using four transmit wavelengths (1296, 1300, 1304, 1309nm) and four receive wavelengths (1274, 1278, 1282, 1287nm) in the O-band with NRZ modulation - Operates as the upstream unit of a BiDi pair and must be deployed with the downstream counterpart (QSFP-100G-B20D4-I) at the far end - LC Simplex connector enables full-duplex transmission over a single fibre, reducing fibre infrastructure requirements - Requires host-based RS-FEC (Reed Solomon Forward Error Correction) to be enabled on the Cisco platform for correct operation and full 20km reach - Industrial temperature rated from -40°C cold start to +85°C mission mode, suitable for 5G fronthaul and outdoor deployments - DOM (Digital Optical Monitoring) support provides real-time monitoring of optical power, temperature, bias current, and voltage

Features

• Four independent 25Gbps transmitters multiplexed through an internal diplexer filter onto a single fibre strand, with four receivers demultiplexed from complementary wavelength groups, enabling full-duplex 100G transmission without requiring duplex cabling
• O-band wavelength operation (1271-1309nm range) minimizes chromatic dispersion over single-mode fibre and uses proven NRZ modulation instead of PAM4, allowing deployment in legacy 100G platforms without advanced modulation support
• Host-based RS-FEC mandatory for 20km reach; the transceiver does not include onboard FEC, so the host platform must be configured to enable Reed Solomon (528,514) forward error correction
• LAN WDM grid spacing with approximately 4.5nm separation between channels and a guard band at 1291nm to prevent crosstalk between upstream and downstream wavelength groups
• Industrial temperature rating (-40°C cold start, -20°C to +85°C mission mode) suited for 5G fronthaul, outdoor cabinets, and environments without climate control
• Hot-pluggable into QSFP28 ports with CAUI-4 electrical interface per IEEE 802.3cu and SFF-8679 specifications; no host reboot or special initialisation sequence required
• Single-fibre bidirectional architecture doubles available bandwidth on existing single-mode infrastructure by pairing upstream and downstream units on the same strand, enabling 200Gbps aggregate capacity with two fibre strands when deploying redundant links

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20U4-I?
A: Yes. This transceiver is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20U4-I, matching the QSFP28 form factor, 100Gbps data rate, O-band wavelengths, and 20km single-mode fibre reach. It is plug-and-play in Cisco platforms with QSFP28 100G ports.

Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver is designed for Cisco switches and routers with QSFP28 100G ports. For specific platform and software version confirmation, refer to Cisco's 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix or contact us with your model and NOS version before ordering.

Q: Why must this be deployed as a matched pair, and what happens if wavelengths are mismatched?
A: The QSFP-100G-B20U4-I upstream unit transmits on 1296/1300/1304/1309nm and receives on 1274/1278/1282/1287nm. The downstream unit (QSFP-100G-B20D4-I) reverses these assignments. Deploying two upstream or two downstream units on the same link will result in no optical signal detection because the transmit wavelengths will not align with the receiver diplexer filters at the far end.

Q: Does this transceiver require RS-FEC to be enabled on the host platform?
A: Yes. Per the Cisco datasheet, the QSFP-100G-B20U4-I requires host-based RS-FEC (Reed Solomon Forward Error Correction) for correct operation and to achieve the full 20km reach. The transceiver does not include onboard FEC. Verify that your Cisco platform supports and enables RS-FEC on the target port.

Q: Can this transceiver operate over G.657 bend-insensitive fibre, or is G.652 fibre mandatory?
A: The transceiver is specified for G.652 single-mode fibre and tested to 20km on standard OS2 cable. G.657 bend-insensitive fibre is backwards compatible with G.652 at 1310nm and O-band wavelengths, so it will function, but reach and link budget may vary depending on fibre quality, connector loss, and bend radius. For installations with tight bend radii or patch panel congestion, confirm optical budget with DOM readings after deployment.
