Description

The QSFP-100G-B20D4-I-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20D4-I. This transceiver provides plug-and-play 100 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over a single strand of G.652 single-mode fibre at distances up to 20km on Cisco QSFP28 platforms. - QSFP28 MSA compliance per IEEE 802.3cu (CAUI-4) and SFF-8679 specifications guarantees electrical and physical interoperability with Cisco QSFP 100G ports - 100Gbps over single LC simplex fibre using O-band wavelengths: Tx 1274/1278/1282/1287 nm, Rx 1296/1300/1304/1309 nm - Downstream BiDi unit operating as matched pair with QSFP-100G-B20U4-I upstream transceiver, enabling full-duplex transmission on one fibre strand via diplexer wavelength separation - Four 25Gbps lanes per direction using NRZ modulation over LAN WDM grid spacing, requires host-based RS-FEC for 20km reach - Industrial temperature rating of -40°C cold start and -20°C to +85°C mission mode operation for deployment in environmentally challenging locations - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) provides real-time access to transmit power, receive power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage parameters

Features

• QSFP28 MSA and IEEE 802.3cu compliance ensures the CAUI-4 electrical interface meets specification for seamless operation in Cisco QSFP 100G ports across switches and routers
• Four-lane architecture with each lane transmitting 25Gbps NRZ modulated signals over LAN WDM wavelengths spaced 4.5nm apart in O-band spectrum where chromatic dispersion is minimal
• Bidirectional diplexer filter technology multiplexes four Tx channels onto single fibre while simultaneously demultiplexing four Rx channels from opposite wavelength group, enabling full-duplex 100Gbps on one strand
• Host-based RS-FEC requirement (Reed-Solomon Forward Error Correction) provides error correction necessary to achieve 20km reach over G.652 single-mode fibre; without FEC enabled reach will be reduced
• Industrial temperature operation from -40°C cold start through -20°C to +85°C mission mode makes this transceiver suitable for outdoor cabinets, wireless backhaul, and other thermally demanding 5G and enterprise deployments
• Hot-swappable installation into QSFP28 ports with DOM monitoring accessible via I2C interface for proactive link health management and troubleshooting optical power budgets
• Single-fibre BiDi topology reduces fibre infrastructure cost and port density requirements compared to duplex LR4 solutions while maintaining equivalent 20km reach and 100Gbps throughput

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20D4-I?
A: Yes. This transceiver is built to QSFP28 MSA specifications with the same CAUI-4 electrical interface, 100Gbps data rate, O-band wavelengths, and LC simplex connector as the Cisco QSFP-100G-B20D4-I. It is plug-and-play compatible and requires host-based RS-FEC to be enabled on the Cisco platform for 20km operation.

Q: What Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver is compatible with Cisco switches and routers that support QSFP 100G ports and provide host-based RS-FEC. Refer to the Cisco 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix for platform-specific confirmation. It has been tested in our Sydney lab against Cisco QSFP-compatible equipment.

Q: What is the difference between the downstream (B20D4-I) and upstream (B20U4-I) units and do I need both?
A: Yes, both are required. BiDi transceivers operate as a matched pair with opposite wavelength assignments. The downstream unit (QSFP-100G-B20D4-I-BCC) transmits at 1274/1278/1282/1287 nm and receives at 1296/1300/1304/1309 nm. The upstream unit (QSFP-100G-B20U4-I-BCC) has the reverse mapping. One unit must be installed at each end of the single-fibre link for bidirectional communication.

Q: Why does this transceiver require RS-FEC and what happens if FEC is not enabled?
A: The QSFP-100G-B20D4-I relies on host-based Reed-Solomon Forward Error Correction to achieve the specified 20km reach over G.652 single-mode fibre. RS-FEC corrects bit errors introduced by optical noise, dispersion, and attenuation across the link. Without RS-FEC enabled on both ends, maximum reach will be significantly reduced and bit error rate may exceed acceptable thresholds for stable 100Gbps operation.

Q: Can I mix this downstream transceiver with a different vendor's upstream BiDi transceiver?
A: BiDi transceivers must use matching wavelength pairs and diplexer filter specifications to interoperate. While industry-standard wavelength assignments improve cross-vendor compatibility, behaviour is not guaranteed. For best results, pair this downstream unit with the corresponding QSFP-100G-B20U4-I-BCC upstream transceiver or verify wavelength and MSA compliance with the alternate vendor before deployment.
