Description

The QFX-QSFP-DACBO-xM-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Juniper QFX-QSFP-DACBO-1M. This passive twinax breakout cable provides plug-and-play connectivity between 40G QSFP+ ports and four independent 10G SFP+ ports on Juniper equipment. - Compliant with SFF-8436 (QSFP+) and SFF-8431 (SFP+) MSA standards, ensuring interoperability across standards-compliant 40G and 10G platforms - Passive copper construction requires no external power, delivering four independent 10.3125 Gb/s lanes for 40 Gb/s aggregate throughput - QSFP+ connector on one end branches to four SFP+ connectors, enabling cost-effective 40G to 4x10G breakout connections - Supports 40GBASE-CR4 Ethernet as well as InfiniBand QDR, Fibre Channel, and SAS protocols over the same physical cable - Available in 1M and 3M lengths for flexible rack and inter-rack deployment - Hot-swappable design with robust pull-to-release latching mechanisms on all five connectors

Features

• SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 MSA compliance guarantees compatibility with standards-based QSFP+ 40G and SFP+ 10G ports, not just Juniper but any vendor adhering to the multi-source agreement
• Four independent electrical lanes operating at 10.3125 Gb/s each, allowing simultaneous connections to four separate 10G switches or devices from a single 40G uplink
• Passive copper design eliminates power consumption beyond what the host port supplies, avoiding the thermal load and complexity of active electronics
• Protocol-agnostic architecture supports 40G Ethernet, 10G Ethernet, InfiniBand QDR/DDR/SDR, Fibre Channel (2G/4G/8G/10G), and SAS applications over the same cable assembly
• Low pair-to-pair skew and controlled impedance across all four lanes maintain signal integrity at full data rate without external equalization
• Hot-swap capability with zinc die-cast connectors and integrated pull-tabs enables live insertion and removal without powering down the host equipment
• 30 AWG twinax construction balances flexibility for routing within racks against mechanical durability for repeated connect/disconnect cycles

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Juniper QFX-QSFP-DACBO-1M?
A: Yes. This cable provides the same QSFP+ to 4x SFP+ breakout functionality, complies with the same SFF-8436 and SFF-8431 standards, and delivers the same 40 Gb/s aggregate data rate as the Juniper original. It is plug-and-play compatible with Juniper equipment that specifies the QFX-QSFP-DACBO-1M.

Q: Which Juniper platforms support this breakout cable?
A: This cable works in any Juniper switch with a QSFP+ 40G port and adherence to the SFF-8436 standard. Confirmed compatible platforms include the QFX series (QFX3500, QFX3600, QFX5100, QFX5110, QFX5120, QFX5200, QFX5210, QFX10002) and EX series (EX4400, EX4600, EX4650) among others. Verify your specific model supports 40G QSFP+ breakout mode.

Q: Can each of the four SFP+ legs operate independently at different speeds?
A: No. While the four SFP+ connectors are electrically independent and can connect to four separate devices, each lane is hard-coded to operate at 10.3125 Gb/s as part of the 40GBASE-CR4 specification. You cannot run one lane at 1G and another at 10G. All four lanes derive their signaling from the host QSFP+ port, which aggregates them into a single 40G interface.

Q: What is the maximum reach for passive copper breakout cables, and when should I use active or optical instead?
A: Passive twinax breakout cables like this are reliable up to 3 meters for 40GBASE-CR4 signaling. Beyond 3M, signal attenuation and crosstalk degrade bit error rate performance. For runs beyond 3M, use an active copper cable (which includes signal conditioning electronics) up to 7M, or switch to a QSFP+ to 4x SFP+ active optical breakout cable for distances up to 100M over multimode fibre.

Q: Does this cable require any configuration on the switch, or is it truly plug-and-play?
A: It is truly plug-and-play. The QSFP+ and SFP+ connectors contain EEPROM that identifies the cable to the switch as a 40GBASE-CR4 breakout assembly. Juniper platforms auto-negotiate the interface mode and enable the four 10G breakout ports without manual intervention. You may need to configure the logical interface IP or VLAN assignments, but the physical layer comes up automatically.
