Q: Can I use this module with 10GBASE-LR optics on the other end of the link?
A: No. 10GBASE-LR operates at 1310nm wavelength, while this 10GBASE-ER module operates at 1550nm. Wavelength mismatch will prevent link establishment. Both ends of a fiber link must use the same optical standard and wavelength. For 40km links, deploy 10GBASE-ER (1550nm) transceivers on both ends. For links under 10km, use 10GBASE-LR (1310nm) on both ends.

Q: Does this transceiver support Forward Error Correction (FEC)?
A: 10GBASE-ER as defined by IEEE 802.3ae does not require or specify FEC. The physical layer operates at 10.3125 Gbps without FEC encoding. The module relies on sufficient optical power budget and receiver sensitivity to achieve the 40km reach over single-mode fiber. If your application requires FEC (such as extended reach beyond standard ER specifications), confirm compatibility with your firewall platform and link partner.
