Description

The PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-SR4-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Palo Alto PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-SR4. This transceiver delivers plug-and-play 40GBASE-SR4 connectivity on Palo Alto firewall platforms with QSFP+ ports. - IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 and QSFP+ MSA (SFF-8436) compliance guarantees interoperability with standard 40G SR4 interfaces - QSFP+ form factor with MPO/MTP connector, 850 nm wavelength, up to 100m over OM3 or 150m over OM4 multi-mode fibre - Four independent 10 Gbps transmit and receive channels using VCSEL laser array for aggregate 40 Gbps throughput - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support provides real-time access to temperature, voltage, bias current, and optical power parameters - Hot-swappable design with commercial temperature range (0 to 70 degrees C) for data centre and enterprise deployments - Supports 4x10G breakout mode for connectivity to four 10GBASE-SR interfaces via MPO-to-duplex LC breakout cable

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 compliance guarantees seamless integration with any vendor's SR4 ports at the physical layer, independent of platform or operating system
• Four parallel lanes architecture: each lane operates at 10.3125 Gbps with independent electrical and optical paths, enabling 4x10G breakout applications using MPO-to-LC breakout cables
• VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) transmitter array at 850 nm delivers low power consumption and cost-effective short-reach transmission over legacy multi-mode infrastructure
• Hot-pluggable QSFP+ MSA form factor occupies one-third the faceplate space of four SFP+ modules while delivering equivalent 40G aggregate bandwidth
• Digital diagnostics interface via I2C exposes real-time optical power levels, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage for proactive link troubleshooting and performance monitoring
• OM3 and OM4 fibre support: 100m reach on OM3 enables reuse of existing 10G-era cabling; 150m on OM4 provides extended reach for intra-building data centre and campus core interconnects

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Palo Alto PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-SR4?
A: Yes. This transceiver is coded to the PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-SR4 specification and matches its IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 physical layer, QSFP+ form factor, 850 nm wavelength, and multi-mode fibre interface. It delivers plug-and-play operation in Palo Alto firewalls with QSFP+ slots.

Q: Which Palo Alto platforms support this module?
A: This transceiver works in any Palo Alto firewall or network device with a QSFP+ port that lists PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-SR4 as a supported optic. The port must support 40GBASE-SR4 signalling at 850 nm over multi-mode fibre with an MPO connector.

Q: What fibre type and reach does this transceiver support?
A: This module requires OM3 or OM4 laser-optimised multi-mode fibre with 50 micron core and an MPO/MTP-12 connector. Maximum reach is 100 metres over OM3 fibre or 150 metres over OM4 fibre, assuming typical link loss budgets and clean connectors. OM5 fibre is also supported at OM4 distances.

Q: Can I use this in 4x10G breakout mode to connect to four separate 10G ports?
A: Yes. The four independent 10 Gbps lanes can be split using an MPO-to-4xLC duplex breakout cable, connecting this transceiver to four 10GBASE-SR SFP+ ports. Each lane operates at 10.3125 Gbps and is electrically and optically independent. Ensure your switch or firewall supports breakout mode on the QSFP+ port.

Q: What DOM parameters are accessible via the digital diagnostics interface?
A: The I2C interface exposes transmit and receive optical power (in dBm) for each of the four lanes, module temperature, transmit bias current per lane, and supply voltage. These parameters are accessible in real time via CLI or management interface on Palo Alto platforms, enabling proactive monitoring of link health and margin.
