Description

The PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-LR4-BCC is a drop-in compatible replacement for the Palo Alto PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-LR4. This QSFP+ transceiver provides plug-and-play 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity on Palo Alto Networks firewall and security platforms with QSFP+ ports. - IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 compliance ensures full interoperability with any standards-compliant 40G interface - QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps aggregate data rate over four 10Gbps CWDM lanes at 1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, and 1331nm - Reaches up to 10km over OS2 single-mode fiber using duplex LC connectors - Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support via I2C interface provides real-time access to temperature, voltage, transmit and receive power - Hot-swappable design allows field installation without interrupting network operation - Compliant with QSFP+ MSA (SFF-8436) and OTU3 standards for multi-protocol versatility

Features

• IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 compliance guarantees full interoperability with any vendor equipment implementing the same standard, independent of manufacturer
• Four-lane CWDM architecture multiplexes four independent 10Gbps channels onto discrete wavelengths (1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, 1331nm), transmitted over a single fiber pair
• Compatible with OTU3 C4S1-2D1 for optical transport network applications beyond Ethernet, enabling deployment in hybrid network environments
• DOM capability exposes real-time optical power levels, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage via I2C, simplifying link budget verification and fault isolation
• Operates within commercial temperature range (0 to 70°C) with maximum power consumption under 3.5W, suitable for high-density firewall and security appliance deployments
• Hot-pluggable QSFP+ MSA form factor supports field installation and replacement without powering down the host device or disrupting adjacent ports
• Duplex LC connector interface and G.652 single-mode fiber compatibility align with existing 10G LR infrastructure for straightforward migration to 40G

FAQs

Q: Will this work in place of the Palo Alto PAN-QSFP-40GBASE-LR4?
A: Yes. This transceiver is engineered to the same IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR4 specification as the Palo Alto original, using the same QSFP+ form factor, 40Gbps data rate, and four-lane CWDM optical interface. It is plug-and-play compatible and will be recognized immediately by Palo Alto firewall platforms with QSFP+ ports.

Q: Which Palo Alto platforms support this transceiver?
A: This module works in any Palo Alto Networks firewall or security appliance with a QSFP+ port that supports 40GBASE-LR4. Compatibility is determined by the presence of a standards-compliant QSFP+ interface, not by specific platform model numbers. Verify your device has QSFP+ ports rated for 40G operation.

Q: What fiber type and connector are required for the full 10km reach?
A: This transceiver requires OS2 (G.652) single-mode fiber terminated with duplex LC connectors. The 10km reach specification assumes a link budget of approximately 6.8dB insertion loss. Actual reach depends on fiber quality, number of connectors and splices, and bend losses. OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber is not compatible with this LR4 module.

Q: Can I use this module for 4x10G breakout to four separate 10GBASE-LR ports?
A: No. The 40GBASE-LR4 standard uses wavelength division multiplexing to combine four 10G lanes onto a single duplex fiber pair. The four wavelengths are not individually accessible for breakout. For 4x10G breakout over four separate fiber pairs, you need a 40G-to-4x10G LR module with an MPO/MTP connector and a breakout cable, not this LR4 variant.

Q: Does this transceiver require any specific FEC or autonegotiation settings?
A: 40GBASE-LR4 per IEEE 802.3ba does not mandate FEC at the physical layer, though some platforms may enable it by default for additional margin. The interface does not support autonegotiation in the traditional sense. Speed and duplex are fixed at 40Gbps full-duplex. Ensure both ends of the link are configured for 40G operation, not 10G or 100G.
