Palo Alto Networks PA Series explained: which firewall fits?

Palo Alto Networks names its hardware firewalls by series. The first digit gives a rough idea of size, and the model within each series sets throughput and ports.

PA Series by site

  • PA-400 Series: desktop firewalls for branch offices and small sites, such as the PA-410, PA-440 and PA-450. Some models offer PoE ports and 5G options.
  • PA-1400 Series: compact rackmount firewalls for mid sized offices and larger branches
  • PA-3400 Series: high performance firewalls for head offices and campus edges
  • PA-5400 Series: data centre and large enterprise firewalls
  • VM-Series: virtual firewalls for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and VMware. See cloud firewalls.

Security subscriptions. The hardware runs PAN-OS, and most protection comes from subscriptions such as Advanced Threat Prevention, Advanced URL Filtering, Advanced WildFire and DNS Security. Budget for the subscription term as well as the hardware.
