How to choose switch modules and parts

Start with the switch model. Every module, power supply and kit is built for specific switch series. Find the model and part number on the switch label or in your management platform before you shop.

Common parts and what they do:

  • Uplink and expansion modules: add SFP+, SFP28 or QSFP ports to modular switches
  • Power supplies: replace a failed unit or add a second for redundancy
  • Fan trays: hot swap cooling for chassis and data centre switches

Match airflow direction. Data centre switch power supplies and fans come in two airflow directions. Every fan and power supply in one switch must flow the same way.

Check the PoE budget. On PoE switches the power supply wattage sets how much PoE you can deliver. A larger supply can lift the total PoE budget.

Think about spares. For sites with uptime targets, keep a spare power supply and fan tray on the shelf. It is cheaper than waiting for a replacement during an outage.
