Industrial PC vs office PC: what is the difference?

An industrial PC runs the same kind of software as an office PC, but it is built to keep running in places an office PC would fail. These are the main differences.

1. Fanless and sealed. Most industrial PCs have no fans, so there are no moving parts to fail and no fans pulling in dust. Office PCs rely on fans and air vents.

2. Wide temperature range. Industrial models often run from minus 40°C to 70°C or more. Office PCs are built for air conditioned rooms.

3. Mounting and power. Industrial PCs mount on DIN rail, walls or panels and run on wide range DC power, often with dual inputs. Office PCs sit on desks and run on AC power.

4. Industrial ports. Expect several Ethernet ports, RS-232 and RS-485 serial ports, digital I/O and sometimes CAN bus, so the PC connects directly to machines and sensors.

5. Long lifecycles. Industrial models stay available and supported for many years, so you can standardise and keep spares. Office models change every year or two.

6. Certifications. Some sites need rail, marine or hazardous area approvals that office PCs do not have.

Choosing the processor. Arm based models suit gateway and protocol tasks with low power use. x86 models suit Windows applications, HMIs, SCADA clients and edge analytics.

For handheld use, see industrial tablets. For heavier workloads at remote sites, see edge servers.
