How to choose a network switch

Start with port count and speed. Most offices run 1GbE to the desk, with 10GbE SFP+ or faster uplinks to the core. Data centre switches step up to 25GbE, 100GbE and 400GbE ports. Before you order, check which SFP transceivers work with your switch.

If you are connecting access points, IP phones or cameras, choose a PoE switch and check the total PoE budget as well as the standard per port. 802.3af (PoE) delivers up to 15.4W per port, 802.3at (PoE+) up to 30W, and 802.3bt (PoE++) up to 90W for high power devices.

A managed switch gives you VLANs, link aggregation, monitoring and access control. Layer 3 switches add routing between VLANs, which suits larger networks and enterprise campus core layers. Unmanaged switches are plug and play and suit small, simple networks.

For harsh sites, industrial switches add DIN rail mounting, wide temperature ranges and redundant power inputs. Copper Ethernet runs up to 100 metres, so use fibre uplinks or media converters for longer distances.
